ICE detainee dies in transit as experts warn of more deaths
Abelardo Avellaneda Delgado, a 68-year-old Mexican-born man who had lived in the U.S. for 40 years, died while being transported from Lowndes County Jail to Stewart detention center on May 5, 2025. The exact cause of death remains under investigation, but the coroner suspected an aortic aneurysm. His family reported he had no prior health conditions but was placed in a wheelchair during his detention and given medications he had never taken before.
