Father of deployed Navy sailor detained by Border Patrol in Key West
Luis Manuel Aviles, 48, a Nicaraguan handyman who has lived in the U.S. for about 19-20 years and holds a work permit, was detained by Border Patrol agents in Key West, Florida while driving his car to a mechanic. His son, Joshua Aviles, was in his ninth month of deployment aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Middle East, working 12-hour shifts including combat operations. Family members said Aviles has a Social Security card, driver's license, and no known criminal history. His wife, Argelia Aviles, described him as devoted to his family, saying "He dedicates himself only to work so he can put food on the table at home. He is a good father." DHS confirmed the arrest, stating Aviles entered the country illegally and will remain in ICE custody while the government seeks his deportation. His case is among at least dozens identified by the AP of parents and spouses of active-duty troops detained under the administration's immigration crackdown.
