Ecuadorian mother, daughter handcuffed at Florida hospital, later self-deport after crash
Grace Stephanie Calero Cabanilla, 39, and her 19-year-old daughter Giulianna Mía Carriel Calero, Ecuadorian nationals who fled Ecuador three years earlier due to death threats, were taken into ICE custody at HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital after a highway rollover crash near Kissimmee. Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies, acting under a 287(g) agreement with ICE, questioned the women in the emergency room and determined their immigration status had lapsed; Grace, still sedated and wearing a cervical collar, was handcuffed at her bedside, while Giulianna, who has epilepsy, suffered a seizure and was handcuffed in her hospital gown and led out in front of other patients and staff. Family members, including Grace's sister Gia Calero, said agents did not identify themselves or produce a warrant despite pleas from relatives, and the family's attorney said both women had pending asylum claims filed before their visas expired, with Grace holding a valid work permit and Florida driver's license. Video of the arrest circulated widely, prompting reaction from the Ecuadorian community and immigrant rights organizations. Fearing for her daughter's health in custody, Grace signed voluntary departure paperwork, and the pair returned to Ecuador, where Grace said she remains afraid to leave her home due to the earlier threats while continuing treatment for crash-related injuries.
