Ecuadorian construction worker detained by ICE days before citizenship hearing in Danbury
Jhonny Ojeda, a 26-year-old construction worker from Ecuador who has lived in the U.S. for five years, was pulled from his truck by ICE agents on West Street in Danbury while driving home from a job site. His fiancée, Kim Rivas, said Ojeda had no criminal record, paid taxes every year, had legal representation, and was in the process of applying for U.S. citizenship. He was transferred to a detention center in Rhode Island and was scheduled to make his first appearance in federal court. His arrest came amid a wave of ICE activity in Danbury, with local officials and advocacy groups estimating that at least 70 people had been detained citywide since the enforcement actions began.
