Man detained by masked ICE agents in Otero County courthouse parking lot

Sep 22, 2026Alamogordo, NM

A man was detained by masked men identifying themselves as ICE agents moments after a judge dismissed the criminal case he had come to fight at the Otero County District Courthouse, according to Dayna Louise Jones, District Defender for the 12th Judicial District. His children, who were present, described the men as masked and traveling in an unmarked vehicle, and Jones said witnesses told her office the detention 'appeared to be coordinated and preplanned with local entities.' Twelfth Judicial District officials, including chief clerk Audrey Hukari, say court staff had no advance knowledge that federal agents were present and that the detention took place in the courthouse parking lot, which is owned by Otero County rather than the court. Hukari cited a New Mexico Supreme Court order requiring outside law enforcement to present credentials to courthouse security and to avoid interfering with proceedings, though the policy does not address parking lots; the man has not been publicly identified, and Otero County has not responded to requests for comment.

The incident occurred during broader Border Patrol sweeps across Southern California targeting largely Latino neighborhoods and raising concerns about racial profiling.

Videographer shot with pepper round by federal agents while covering Portland ICE protest

Jun 13, 2025Portland, OR

Mason Lake, an independent journalist and founder of the Portland-based outlet Channel Heed, was shot by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents with a pepper round that struck his right arm while he filmed a protest outside an immigration detention center around 10 p.m. on June 13, 2025. The protest followed the arrest of Moisés Sotelo, a Newberg business owner detained by federal immigration agents the day after at least four asylum-seekers were detained outside a Portland courthouse following immigration hearings. Despite wearing clear press markings on his coat, helmet, and belt, ICE agents shot at him multiple times, and Lake believes the ICE Special Response Team was responsible, identifying agents' badges as belonging to the Houston Field Office. Since 2020, Lake has been assaulted at least 14 times while covering Portland protests. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin later said in a statement that journalists should be cautious while covering what she called 'violent riots,' adding that President Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem are 'committed to restoring law and order.' In November 2025, Lake and fellow journalist Hugo Rios filed a federal class-action lawsuit against President Trump, the Department of Homeland Security, and Noem, alleging indiscriminate, retaliatory violence by DHS agents. In March 2026, Lake and Rios won a preliminary injunction protecting journalists against retaliatory violence by DHS agents in Portland.

Jun 12, 2025Montebello, CA

Brian Gavidia, a 29-year-old U.S. citizen born and raised in East Los Angeles, was detained by Border Patrol agents on June 12 at his workplace on West Olympic Boulevard in Montebello during an immigration enforcement operation in the San Gabriel Valley. An agent pushed Gavidia against a metal fence and demanded proof of citizenship, asking repeatedly where he was born despite his repeated statements that he was American. Video footage shows two agents holding Gavidia against the fence while he stated "I'm American, bro!" Agents confiscated his Real ID and did not return it; they also took his phone for approximately 20 minutes before returning it. Gavidia, whose mother is Colombian and his father is Salvadoran, believes he was targeted because of his Latino heritage and appearance. He described the encounter as traumatic, saying he feared for his life when an agent racked a chamber in an AR-15. A friend who was filming the encounter was injured and bleeding from the forehead after being pushed by another agent. Gavidia has since joined an ACLU lawsuit with other plaintiffs challenging immigration enforcement tactics and racial profiling, and has renounced his earlier support for President Trump, stating he was "manipulated" and "brainwashed." He now carries a copy of the U.S. Constitution and helps with know-your-rights workshops.
