Jan 15, 2026Eugene, ORMexico

Misael Garcia Lopez, 48, spent 18 years building a life in Eugene, Oregon with his wife Valeria and three children—Leo, 11, Jasmine, 22, and Luis—working in landscaping, roofing, and other jobs. On November 19, 2025, ICE agents in unmarked vehicles conducted a traffic stop near Meadowlark Prairie minutes after he dropped Leo at school and arrested him for lacking legal status, despite his clean criminal record. Over nearly two months detained at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, Washington, Garcia Lopez received support letters from family, friends, and community members attesting to his work ethic, kindness, and role as a devoted father. His 22-year-old daughter Jasmine, a U.S. citizen and certified nursing assistant, spoke publicly about his case despite her mother's fear. On January 15, 2026, Garcia Lopez accepted voluntary departure and was deported to Mexico, arriving with only 96 cents and no documents. His family remained in Oregon; months later, he watched via video call as his grandson was born.

Ghanaian LGBTQ+ asylum seekers, shackled and deported to Cameroon, now face curfew and work ban

Jan 15, 2026Ghana

Soraya, a pseudonym for a Ghanaian woman, fled to the United States in 2024 after her family discovered her sexual orientation and people sought to harm her. She was granted a US withholding of removal, a protection measure meant to prevent her from being sent back to a country where she would face persecution, but was deported to Cameroon on January 15, 2026, alongside two other Ghanaian LGBTQ+ women, on the first flight of third-country removals. She and others described being shackled during the journey, with one saying, "I felt like a terrorist because what on earth did I do to be shackled like that." The deportees were held for about two months at a government compound in Yaounde and only allowed to leave after staging a hunger strike; they must now return to the compound by sundown and are barred from working while their asylum applications in Cameroon remain pending. Their lawyer, Fru Joseph, has raised concerns that the women face a heightened risk of persecution in a country they have no ties to.

Protester permanently blinded by federal agent's less-lethal round at Santa Ana ICE rally

Jan 15, 2026Santa Ana, CA

Kaden Rummler, 21, was permanently blinded in his left eye after a federal agent shot him in the face with a less-lethal crowd control weapon during an anti-ICE protest in downtown Santa Ana, California on January 9, 2026. Rummler was protesting ICE deportations and the death of Renee Good at the hands of an immigration agent in Minneapolis. The impact caused severe injuries: doctors removed plastic, glass, and metal fragments from his face and skull, found pieces of plastic and glass embedded in his skull, metal in his stomach lining, and a piece of plastic the size of a nickel in his injured eye. A piece of ammunition narrowly missed his carotid artery. Rummler underwent six-hour surgery to remove shrapnel from his injuries. Officers did not call paramedics immediately and at one point pushed his face into a pool of his own blood. Rummler was one of two protesters shot in the face that night. A protester lost an eye after being struck by a scattershot munition fired by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department during immigration enforcement protests in Los Angeles. The case, Castellanos v. City of Los Angeles, resulted in litigation against local authorities under state negligence laws. PHR and UC Berkeley identified scattershot munitions as inherently indiscriminate weapons that make it impossible to prevent significant unintended harm, recommending they never be used for crowd control.
