Iowa City mother's family disputes ICE claim she used fake passport

Sep 24, 2026Iowa City, IAIvory Coast

Fatou Traore, a 43-year-old University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics custodian born in Ivory Coast, was detained by ICE agents in unmarked vehicles on Sept. 24 while leaving for work, according to her son Esoumaila Diallo and her sister Haby Diallo, who witnessed the arrest. ICE claims Traore has a 2011 final removal order and admitted to using a fake birth certificate and passport to enter the country, but her son and attorneys dispute this, saying she never made such admissions and always asked for her lawyer when questioned. Attorneys for Traore provided a 2011 order granting her withholding of removal from Ivory Coast and a valid employment authorization card good through March 2029. She is being held at Richwood Correctional Center in Monroe, Louisiana, and told she will be deported to Sierra Leone, a country she has never visited, while her attorneys have filed a motion to stay her removal. She left behind her husband, who works alongside her at the hospital, and four sons ages 3 to 19.

Son released after ICE traffic stop, mother still detained in Alabama

Sep 24, 2026Sevierville, TN

Kristopher Rivas-Betanco, a Sevier County High School senior and soccer team captain from Honduras who has lived in Tennessee since 2019, was detained by ICE on September 17 alongside his mother, Gladys Betanco-Martinez, after local police stopped their vehicle while driving home from her job, with his two younger sisters also in the car. The two spent a night together in the Knoxville jail before being separated and sent to different facilities; ICE later said it determined Kristopher was still a minor, not 18 as prior records indicated, and released him on September 22, returning him to Tennessee into a guardian's care. He was back with family by September 23 but had not yet returned to school, while his mother remained held at a detention facility in Alabama. Friends and coaches described him as a polite, well-liked young man who hopes to play college soccer and become an engineer; the family's asylum case had been dismissed by a judge in 2024. Kristopher said returning home without his mother and sisters has been difficult, and family and friends started a GoFundMe and online petition to fund an immigration attorney and push for his mother's release.

Peruvian man detained in Massachusetts faces attempted third-country removal to Central African Republic

Sep 24, 2026MAPeru

A Peruvian man identified in court filings as "John Doe," who has judicial protections against deportation to Peru, has been held in ICE custody in Massachusetts since July. After an appeals court struck down the Trump administration's third-country removal policy, a Department of Justice attorney argued the ruling wasn't yet in effect and sought to transfer Doe to another facility to put him on a flight to the Central African Republic. Doe's attorneys, including Mary Holper, obtained an emergency clarification from the appeals court reaffirming the policy was dissolved immediately, and a judge declined to lift the stay barring his removal, though he remains in detention. Flight data showed ICE charter planes continued flying to and landing in African countries used for third-country removals hours after the court's order, raising concerns the government may still be violating the ruling.

He had an approved I-130 petition, a pending I-485 green card application, a pending motion to reopen before the Board of Immigration Appeals, and a federal habeas corpus petition, but was deported to Haiti after 19 days in detention alongside 38 other Haitians. An advocacy campaign led by his U.S.-citizen wife, Omara Boniface Nunez, briefly got him pulled from an initial deportation flight, but USCIS denied his green card application days later. His wife and their two U.S.-born children, Isaac and Sofia, remain in York, where he pastored a congregation, and his Motion to Reopen remains pending.

Judge orders ICE to fix squalid detention conditions at NYC facility

Sep 24, 2026New York, NY

A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order, later followed by a permanent injunction, requiring ICE to improve conditions at its 26 Federal Plaza detention facility in Manhattan. Detainees, including Sergio Alberto Barco Mercado, who filed a complaint after mass arrests at the site, were reportedly held on floors without beds, given only two meals a day, and denied hygiene products and access to legal counsel. The court found that ICE willfully violated prior orders and kept detainees in overcrowded rooms without adequate bedding, hygiene supplies, or proper temperature control. The rulings required ICE to provide sleeping mats, hygiene products, and legal access to those held at the facility.

He held employment authorization and a Social Security number, worked assembling ventilation and refrigeration equipment, filed federal tax returns for two years, resided in Fremont, California, had a partner of one year, and regularly attended a Mormon temple. In June 2026, he was arrested for an alleged DUI after being found sleeping in his parked car outside his home. He was not shown a warrant at his re-arrest and was subsequently transferred to the Central Valley Annex detention facility in McFarland, California.
