ICE ride-alongs with Utah police lead to five detentions near turkey plant
ICE agents rode along with North Valley Police Department officers conducting traffic stops across Moroni, Mount Pleasant and Fountain Green in Sanpete County, Utah, near the Norbest turkey-processing plant, resulting in five people being detained. Local officers performed the roughly five-hour operation, pulling drivers over for violations like speeding or broken lights before handing suspects to ICE, which decided whom to arrest under a 287(g) task force agreement signed by the North Valley and Gunnison Valley police departments with ICE in August. A DHS spokesperson said some detainees had final orders of removal and prior offenses including illegal reentry and DUI, and remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings; ICE said the operation was part of nationwide enforcement unrelated to the plant and did not release detainees' identities or confirm employment there. The arrests spread fear through Moroni's Hispanic community, with families avoiding stores, missing work and keeping children home from school. Police Chief Steve Gray said the tactics used 'did not coincide with our values, policies and procedures' and that the department is reconsidering its 287(g) agreement.
