Kashmiri filmmaker detained by ICE at Dulles Airport, later granted bond
Arfat Sheikh, a 42-year-old award-winning filmmaker from India-administered Kashmir, was detained by ICE agents on September 24 after disembarking a flight from California at Washington Dulles International Airport. Sheikh had entered the U.S. in 2019 on a student visa to pursue a graduate degree in film studies at Georgia State University and filed for asylum in 2020; his pending application had authorized him to live and work in the U.S. His first feature film, "Saffron Kingdom," which explores the Kashmir conflict, won awards at several festivals including the Chicago Filmmakers Awards and the LA Film and Documentary Awards. DHS stated Sheikh had overstayed his lawful admission and that a pending application does not confer legal status, though he would receive due process. Friends and family called his detention "unlawful" and demanded his release, and he was later granted bond and set for release.
