LGBTQ Nigerian man with protection attempts suicide in ICE detention, then restrained for 24 hours and beaten, physician finds
A gay man from Nigeria granted withholding of removal in 2025, whose case is still on appeal, attempted suicide in ICE detention in 2026 after being put through repeated screenings for removal to third countries. He was placed in a solitary confinement cell, denied food and water, and given no access to a medical provider. He told his attorney and an evaluating physician that when he began writing on the walls, staff took him to a closet out of view of cameras and beat him, then restrained him on a table for about 24 hours with his arms above his head, naked except for a vest, without food, water, or bathroom access, so that he urinated and defecated on himself. He says staff used a racial slur and told him, "Go back to your country, you don't belong here." He was later diagnosed with a muscle-tissue breakdown that can cause renal failure, and the physician concluded his symptoms and examination were consistent with the reported assault and restraint.
