Turkish refugee who fled political persecution deported to Central African Republic, separated from wife and two young children
A Turkish refugee granted withholding of removal, who fled political persecution, was deported to the Central African Republic and separated from his wife and two young children, who are lawful permanent residents in the United States. He had already been held for one year and five months in immigration detention, more than a year of it after he won protection, far from where his family lived; during that time his older son developed mental-health problems and began seeing a therapist. He filed a motion to reopen his case, plus an emergency motion in the federal court where he had filed a habeas petition, shortly before he was removed, but was forced onto the flight before either was decided. His attorneys at the Center for Constitutional Rights say he would have been granted asylum if not for the unlawful 2023 asylum-ban regulation. The family now faces potentially permanent separation.
