Guatemalan man's courthouse arrest confirmed as first under new Connecticut law

Jun 22, 2026Danbury, CTGuatemala

Edvin Obdulio Barnica-Esquivel was arrested by ICE agents at Danbury Superior Court on June 22, 2026, on a federal charge of illegally reentering the United States after prior deportations in 2012 and 2019. A video shared with CT Insider showed at least six ICE agents escorting him out of the courthouse in handcuffs. Connecticut Judicial Branch spokesperson Stephen Ment confirmed this was the first and only courthouse arrest since a new state law took effect May 4, 2026, requiring judicial marshals to verify a warrant beforehand, and said the warrant was verified prior to the detention. ICE, which executed a judicial warrant issued by U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Dave Vatti on June 10, 2026, said in a statement that "Connecticut's sanctuary politicians do not control federal law enforcement."

Russian asylum seeker released after ICE re-detained him following four years of freedom

Jun 27, 2026Russia

A Russian national entered the United States and was released on his own recognizance in July 2022. On June 27, 2026, ICE re-detained him after a routine check-in with immigration authorities. He is seeking asylum in the United States. He filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus and motion for temporary restraining order challenging his detention. The court found that his prior release by immigration authorities created a liberty interest in his continued release and that his re-detention without a pre-deprivation hearing violated due process. On July 8, 2026, the federal court granted his habeas petition and ordered his immediate release on the same terms and conditions he was subject to prior to his re-detention.

ICE detains 39 in Wisconsin surge, stages arrests at city lot without permission

Jun 27, 2026Milwaukee, WI

ICE arrested 39 people across Wisconsin over the final weekend in June, among the largest enforcement operations in the state since January 2025, with videos documenting agents drawing firearms, breaking car windows, and using tasers despite a lack of resistance. Advocacy group Voces de la Frontera said its volunteers recorded more than two dozen additional arrests in the following week, including three in Fitchburg, with some detainees held as far away as Florida. Officials said ICE agents used a Milwaukee police station parking lot and a South Side park as staging areas without authorization, violating city and county policies requiring permission; police said they did not consent and asked the agency to stop. Legal experts have raised concerns about the proportionality of the tactics used.

Ecuadorian man arrested at NYC immigration court despite federal judge's order

Jun 26, 2026New York, NYEcuador

An Ecuadorian man was arrested by ICE agents at an immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan on Thursday, June 26, 2026. The man had fled persecution in his home country, entered the U.S., and was released from detention while his immigration case proceeded. He appeared at court as legally required for his scheduled hearing. ICE cited a 2025 conviction for disorderly conduct as justification, but advocates with Make the Road New York argue the arrest violates a federal court order issued May 18, 2026, that barred ICE from making arrests at Manhattan immigration courts except in narrow circumstances. The man has since been transferred to the D. Ray James ICE Processing Center in Folkston, Georgia.

He had previously been removed to Mexico in 2001 and later reentered without authorization; ICE reinstated his 2001 removal order and provided written notice on Form I-871 the day of his arrest. Juarez-Trevizo filed an emergency application for a temporary restraining order to stop his removal, arguing his arrest was warrantless and his detention violated due process, but a federal court denied the request, finding he had not shown likelihood of success on those claims. On June 26, 2026, he filed a habeas corpus petition against ICE official Todd M. Lyons in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, challenging his continued detention; the case was assigned to Judge Michael Walter Fitzgerald.

Jun 26, 2026Los Angeles, CANicaragua

Wilber Urbina Garcia, an 18-year-old honors graduate of Jordan High School in South Los Angeles, was detained by ICE on June 10, 2026, during a routine asylum check-in at a federal courthouse the morning after his graduation ceremony. His family fled Nicaragua in late 2022 seeking asylum due to political persecution and were in asylum proceedings with valid work permits at the time. Teachers described Wilber as shy but disciplined, with leadership roles by senior year, and he had dreamed of becoming a doctor, registering for pre-med classes at El Camino College. ICE agents told the family Wilber was no longer covered under his mother's asylum case because he had turned 18, though his attorney argued he should remain tied to the case as a derivative applicant filed before age 21. He was held at Adelanto ICE Processing Center for over two weeks in conditions including sewage overflow and insufficient food, where he said older detainees treated him like family. After public defenders challenged ICE's justification, a judge ordered his release on June 26. His mother and eldest brother entered removal proceedings and were fitted with ankle monitors, and an ICE agent told the family his 17-year-old sister would face detention upon turning 18.

The government sought to detain him without a bond hearing under INA § 1225, claiming he was "seeking admission."
