Ghanaian LGBTQ woman with withholding of removal deported to Cameroon after officers threw deportation papers in her face
Thelma, an LGBTQ woman from Ghana, was granted withholding of removal after immigration judges found she faced persecution because of her sexual orientation. She believed her court victory meant she would not be returned to danger. Instead, she remained detained for months and was abruptly informed she would be sent to Cameroon. When she was pressured to sign deportation paperwork, the official told her "whether you sign or don't sign, you're going back" and that he didn't "give a fuck." When she asked to speak to a lawyer, the officer told her to "fuck off" and threw the documents in her face. She was shackled during transport through Louisiana and Senegal before arriving in Cameroon, where she described overcrowded and degrading detention conditions with inadequate food, medical care, and little information about her legal status.
