Colombian delivery driver fatally shot by ICE agent during mistaken Maine traffic stop

Oct 1, 2026Biddeford, MEColombia

Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian national with legal work authorization, was fatally shot on July 13, 2026 by ICE officer David Brouillette during a mistaken traffic stop near a laundromat in Biddeford, Maine. He was driving to an early-morning DoorDash delivery shift and also worked as a veterinary clinic cleaner when agents conducting surveillance for someone else with a final removal order rammed his vehicle and fired five shots through the windshield, striking him in the head, as his 3-year-old daughter witnessed the shooting. DHS claimed the vehicle tried to flee, a claim disputed by witnesses, and officials later confirmed he was not the intended target. His partner, Karolina Rojas, described him as 'a hard worker devoted to his family' who 'always dreamed big' for their daughter, while a neighbor called him 'a good person,' quiet and dedicated. Relatives say the officer who shot him has a history of serious mental health struggles dating to childhood. He was the 11th person fatally shot by federal immigration officials during Trump's second term. Hundreds protested in Biddeford, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin briefly paused ICE traffic stops before Trump reversed the decision, the FBI declined to open a civil rights investigation, and the Maine Attorney General's Office and DHS Office of Inspector General opened inquiries. Senator Angus King, Governor Janet Mills, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, and Congressman Bennie Thompson called for independent investigations, his family sought to repatriate his body to Colombia, and community ICE-watch groups across Maine ramped up efforts to monitor ICE vehicles amid an intensified enforcement campaign known as Operation Catch of the Day.

Honduran asylum seeker detained since September 2025 denied emergency release from Texas facility

Sep 10, 2025Taylor, TXHonduras

A Honduran asylum seeker was detained by federal immigration authorities on or about September 10, 2025, and has since been held at the T. Don Hutto Detention Center in Taylor, Texas. He filed a habeas corpus petition along with applications for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction, seeking an order barring his removal from the district, production of his detention records, a show-cause hearing, an expedited individualized custody hearing, and his release. He argued that his detention without a bond hearing violates due process and that he faces practical prejudice in preparing his asylum application while detained, raising a right-to-counsel claim. The court found he was not likely to succeed on the merits, citing statutory authorization for detention during removal proceedings and holding that right-to-counsel claims must be raised before the court of appeals on review of a removal order. The court also found no showing of irreparable harm, noting he did not demonstrate how a transfer or his continued detention would harm his asylum claim beyond ordinary hardships of detention. The court denied the TRO application and held the preliminary injunction request in abeyance.

She requested asylum more than a decade ago, and her case has remained pending since then. Her husband, José Avila, and their young sons, including 12-year-old Isaac and 10-year-old Jeremiah, have struggled with her absence, including during a Mother's Day church service where the boys had no mother to greet. José said, "It's really hard to see everything my wife is going through. It hurts not being able to be with my wife — and seeing my kids sad — because their mother is always around." Immigration officials said he had recently been identified as a member of a criminal organization. He was one of eight men deported to South Sudan on July 5 after a legal battle, and a federal judge ruled the flight violated a court order requiring migrants be given a meaningful opportunity to object to their removal. Mexico later accepted his return after receiving assurances he would not face torture or inhumane treatment, and he was repatriated to Mexico.
