Alvarez, who lives with disabilities including depression, anxiety and arthritis, drives three hours every Sunday to visit her, and the couple speaks by phone daily. Chacón Santos said she has no criminal convictions and is still awaiting a decision on her case.

In Evanston, Illinois, federal immigration agents believed to be from ICE attempted to detain an adult resident near Howard Street and Dodge Avenue during what they described as a fugitive investigation, mistaking him for someone else. According to police, the man refused to provide identification, was held for fingerprinting, and resisted, and he was later found on the ground with injuries to his head, neck and teeth; an ambulance took him to St. Francis Hospital, where police photographed and documented his injuries. Months after her removal, she said she has had to hide out of fear of encountering her family. "I don’t go out anymore, I’m scared of coming across my family," she said. "They ruined my life."

Federal agents in Evanston, Illinois detained a US citizen they mistakenly believed matched a fugitive they were seeking, resulting in injuries to his head, neck, and teeth. Police said the man resisted after being asked for identification and was later released once agents realized he was not the person they were looking for. The agents reportedly left the area after protesters gathered, fearing they would be attacked. The incident is under investigation by local police.

An unnamed client of immigration attorney Javier Rivera, a victim of domestic violence with legal protections meant to shield her from removal, was deported to Nicaragua in August. A federal court has already ordered her return to the United States. Rivera said the administration is 'in such a hurry to kick people out... that they aren't actually looking at the legality of some of this stuff.'
