Son acquitted of assault after shielding father during ICE arrest, faces deportation
A 31-year-old man, Isaac Luis-Amazar, was detained by ICE on January 29, 2026, after agents ran his father's license plate in a Home Depot parking lot and followed the truck into a neighborhood before stopping it. His father, Luis Castro Silas, ran from the vehicle and was chased and taken to the ground by an officer; Luis-Amazar then ran over, and he and the officer gave differing accounts of what happened next. The government charged him with assaulting a federal officer, and on July 16, 2026, a jury deliberated about two hours before finding him not guilty after he rejected a plea deal to fight the charges. He has lived in the United States for 22 years since being brought as a child, has three children, no criminal record, and has worked steadily, but now faces deportation proceedings.
