Chinese dissident detained five months by ICE after documenting Uyghur camps
Guan Heng, a Chinese asylum seeker who documented internment camps in Xinjiang, was arrested by ICE agents at his home in Albany in August 2025 and detained for five months. Guan had fled China after his 2021 YouTube footage exposed human rights abuses targeting Uyghur Muslims. He arrived in the U.S. in 2021, applied for asylum, and settled in New York before his detention. The arrest reflects a troubling pattern affecting Chinese dissidents seeking refuge in the United States.
