ICE arrests dozens in Danbury as raids escalate, sparking community outcry
ICE conducted a multi-day surge of arrests in Danbury, Connecticut this week, with activists from Danbury Unites for Immigrants and CT Students for a Dream reporting 16 people detained Monday, 12 on Tuesday, and at least 25 more detained Wednesday, including parents taken in front of their children at school bus stops and people picked up at day-laborer sites like Kennedy Park. Activists said ICE tactics have escalated compared to a similar operation last year, describing agents using chains rather than handcuffs, pepper-spraying observers, and hitting activists with vehicles while they attempted to record arrests. Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves, Gov. Ned Lamont, U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes and U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy held a press conference at Kennedy Park condemning the arrests, where angry residents shouted over officials and demanded stronger action to protect immigrants and enforce Connecticut's Trust Act.
