Navy veteran with three Iraq tours detained by ICE after leaving reentry program
Benito Miranda Hernandez, a Navy veteran who served three tours during the Iraq War, was detained by ICE in June 2026 as he was leaving a reentry halfway house in Barrio Logan, San Diego, after completing a sentence for a drug conviction. Brought to the U.S. from Mexico as a baby, Hernandez had his green card reinstated in November before his arrest, but he now faces possible deportation. He is being held at Otay Mesa Detention Center. His mother, Maria Miranda, and veteran advocates including Hector Barajas and James L. Smith II say he struggled with PTSD and an extensive criminal history following his deployments, and was trying to turn his life around after completing the reentry program. His case is part of a broader trend of immigrant veterans facing deportation despite military service that was supposed to provide a path to citizenship.
