Cuban Grammy-winning percussionist detained by ICE at Miami airport
Cuban percussionist Degnis Nelson Bofill Miranda, a Latin Grammy winner and founder of the group Golpes Libres, was detained by ICE agents at Miami International Airport while returning from a music conference in New York. Bofill entered the U.S. in 2023 on a visa and has a pending asylum case that had not yet reached its initial interview stage. His wife, Mara Delgado, said he was not yet listed in ICE's detainee locator, complicating efforts to secure legal representation, and she launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his legal defense. Friends and fellow musicians, including Yadasny José Portillo Herrera and composer Jesús Pupo, publicly voiced support for Bofill, describing him as an integrated member of Miami's music community.
