Louisville woman with sickle cell anemia detained by ICE, advocates say medication withheld
Sarafina Bukirwa, a 34-year-old Louisville woman with valid work authorization, was detained by ICE at Muhammad Ali International Airport on July 22, 2026, and transferred to Grayson County Detention Center in Leitchfield. According to her attorneys and family members, Bukirwa has sickle cell anemia and is not receiving proper medication for the condition while in custody. The Grayson County Jailer has stated that Bukirwa is receiving all prescribed medications. U.S. Congressman Morgan McGarvey has called for her release, and advocates have raised concerns about medical care standards in immigration detention facilities.
