71-year-old Korean woman restrained and hospitalized after ICE detains her at green card interview
Chang Yeon Cho, a 71-year-old Gardena, California resident originally from Korea, was detained by ICE in June during her permanent residency interview despite having no criminal convictions, according to Korean American influencer Ed Choi, who shared her story on behalf of her husband, Jongs Soo Kim (also referred to as Kim Jong-soo). Cho and Kim married the previous year and ran a clothing alteration business together; her detention reportedly stemmed from an old, uncharged arrest tied to a dispute with a customer over unpaid alteration fees. Cho, who lived in Brazil for many years and speaks Korean and Portuguese but not English, was physically restrained on her first night in custody after a communication breakdown with staff, then collapsed and was hospitalized for eight days; the South Korean consulate attributed her hospitalization, including an endoscopy, to low blood pressure and vomiting from stress and unfamiliar food. She is held at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in San Bernardino County, where her bond request was denied on August 25 and she received a final order of removal, raising the prospect of separation from her husband. The Korean Consulate General in Los Angeles has visited her multiple times, and a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $20,000 toward a $24,000 goal for her legal expenses.
