24-year-old Cameroonian woman forced to wear wet clothes in freezing detention after being denied a change of clothes by three different officers
Sandra, a 24-year-old woman from Cameroon, arrived at the San Diego detention center with stained clothes. She washed them in the sink, but the facility was too cold for her to wear them wet, so she asked if she could get a change of clothes from her bags. An officer said, 'Who washed those clothes? You have to put them back on just like that. That's the consequence for your action.' She asked a second officer who shrugged and said she had already been told no. A third officer also refused. She remained in wet clothes in the freezing air-conditioned facility. She was expelled to Panama, where she requested asylum but was refused. Officials told her if she appealed, she would not succeed.
