Former Nicaraguan paramilitary member detained by ICE faces deportation or statelessness
Marlon Gerardo Sáenz Cruz, 65, a Nicaraguan defector who was among 222 prisoners stripped of citizenship and brought to the U.S. in February 2023, was detained by immigration authorities during a routine check-in in Los Angeles. He now faces an immigration court hearing to determine whether he can remain in the U.S., after being imprisoned and allegedly tortured in Nicaragua for opposing the Ortega-Murillo government. His representative says he has developed a leg ulcer, glaucoma, and worsening complications from childhood polio, and now uses a wheelchair while detained at Central Louisiana ICE Processing Center. He is seeking asylum or deferral of removal under the Convention Against Torture, though advocates warn he could still be sent to a third country where he has no ties.
