Venezuelan woman detained by ICE after calling police over car crash
Daniela Portillo, a Venezuelan woman, called police after another vehicle struck her car in Polk County, Florida on June 8 and the other driver fled the scene. She waited several hours for authorities to arrive, and when a sheriff's deputy responded, he determined she was not a U.S. citizen and detained her. An immigration official confirmed her status and issued a civil detainer, and she is now held in immigration custody in Louisiana. She described the experience as "traumatic," "devastating" and "exhausting," and her family and legal team say the detention was unjust.
