Woman detained by ICE after miscarriage, held days without medical care
Iara do Carmo Santana was arrested after her fiancé called 911 during a mental health crisis following a recent miscarriage and infection. She was charged with domestic violence and held roughly four days at ICE's Burlington, Massachusetts field office, where she was often deprived of medicine as her infection worsened. A federal judge, Leo T. Sorokin, ordered her release last week, criticizing ICE for failing to provide necessary medical care. "I was afraid that I was going to go crazy in there," she told the Globe. "I was really scared."
