Over 500 babies and toddlers detained by ICE, violating court-mandated 20-day limit
Since January 2025, ICE has detained at least 500 babies and toddlers, with an average of 25 children aged 3 or younger held in custody daily between January and March 2026—a tenfold increase compared to fewer than three young children detained daily during the previous 12 months under Biden. At least 175 infants and toddlers were held beyond the court-mandated 20-day limit established in the Flores v. Reno settlement. Children at facilities including the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas experienced developmental delays, malnutrition, untreated illnesses, and behavioral regression. Medical professionals reported that large numbers of children in detention settings are vulnerable to fevers, vomiting, diarrhea, and coughing, with inadequate medical care provided.
