Brooklyn restaurant owner says Haiti TPS fallout worse than COVID shutdown
A Supreme Court ruling allowed the Trump administration to terminate Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, effective July 27, 2026, and federal officials have said they plan to increase deportation flights to Haiti. Brooklyn restaurant owner Wesly Simon lost nine employees and a 40-60% drop in sales, and says the crisis is worse than the pandemic because, unlike during COVID, there is no stimulus or employee retention support. About 5,000 Haitian immigrants in New York City and roughly 300,000 nationwide have lost work authorization, and community organizers describe fear keeping former customers and workers at home. Over 40,000 Haitian TPS holders in New York previously contributed more than $140 million annually in state and local taxes.
