ICE agents occupy Frederick neighborhood for 40 hours, clash with residents
Federal immigration agents arrived around 6 a.m. Thursday, September 3, near Stoneybrook Court and Schaffer Drive in the Taskers Chance subdivision and remained for more than 40 hours, into late Friday night. Residents said agents occupied every street of the small subdivision, prompting people to stay inside and skip work, while observers from the Western Maryland Immigrant Rights Collective monitored the scene. City Council Vice President Katie Nash said, "It's nuts. Now people are just not leaving their houses." On Friday night, agents ordered the block cleared, and when some neighbors and observers linked arms in front of a house, agents drove onto the sidewalk, dragged people off a porch, used batons, and piled onto those on the ground, injuring several people; ICE said it had been searching for a man who fled a vehicle stop on Thursday. Frederick's mayor, city council president, and county executive publicly criticized the tactics as intimidating residents and disrupting the neighborhood.
