From July 27 to August 29, 2026, ICE conducted Operation Rotten Apple, quietly detaining nearly 2,200 immigrants across New York state, including in Democratic-led 'sanctuary' cities. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin retroactively announced the operation's success on September 1. The operation exemplified the administration's shift toward less visible but continued aggressive enforcement after the Minneapolis shootings drew public backlash.
