Venezuelan asylum seeker detained by ICE one week after his wedding
Nelson Contreras-Gelves, a 35-year-old asylum seeker from Venezuela who arrived in the U.S. in 2022, was detained by ICE on June 27, 2026, after returning to a rescheduled immigration hearing in Philadelphia, just one week after his wedding reception. He had followed all required procedures and was in the process of seeking asylum. His wife, Ariel Whaley of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, said she was not given a reason for his detention and has since worked with attorneys on a habeas corpus petition for his release. Contreras-Gelves works as a distribution associate at Mighty Writers, a nonprofit in New Garden Township, where colleagues describe him as 'irreplaceable' and part of their extended family. A crowdfunding campaign has raised more than $38,000 to help cover legal expenses and household costs while he remains detained.
