Venezuelan father deported to Liberia despite pending habeas case, missed baby's birth
Carlos Tellez Sánchez, a 35-year-old Venezuelan man living in Texas, was detained by ICE in December 2025 after attending a routine immigration check-in appointment. He had been granted a Withholding of Removal order in 2021 and had an active habeas corpus petition pending before a federal court in South Texas, but after more than seven months in custody he was deported to Liberia. His third child was born while he was detained, and he has only been able to see the baby through video calls. Family members describe him as the family's main provider with no criminal record and call the deportation arbitrary. He was placed on a flight to Liberia with 19 other deportees, some of whom were restrained after resisting the transfer, and is now staying at a hotel there while deciding whether to seek asylum or travel elsewhere.
