Venezuelan father deported to Liberia despite protection order, missing child's birth
Carlos Tellez Sánchez, a 35-year-old Venezuelan man who fled Venezuela and settled in Dallas in 2021, was detained by ICE in December 2025 during what he believed was a routine immigration check-in appointment. He had been granted a Withholding of Removal order in 2021 protecting him from being sent back to Venezuela and had an active habeas corpus petition pending in federal court, but after months in detention he was deported in handcuffs on a flight to Liberia, nearly 6,000 miles from his family. He worked during the day at a car dealership and drove for Uber Eats at night to support his wife and children, and has no criminal record beyond civil immigration violations. His family says one of his children was born while he was in custody, and he has only been able to see the baby through video calls. His brother, Juan Tellez, said he has no idea why Tellez Sanchez was sent to Liberia and described him as 'a good person and hard worker' who 'doesn't deserve what happened to him.' He was flown to Liberia along with 19 other deportees, some of whom were restrained after resisting the transfer, and is now staying at a hotel there while deciding whether to seek asylum or travel elsewhere.
