Ecuadorian mother and daughter detained by ICE in Florida hospital ER after crash
Grace Stephanie Calero Cabanilla, 39, and her 19-year-old daughter Giulianna Mía Carriel Calero, both Ecuadorian nationals, were handcuffed and taken into ICE custody while being treated at HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital's emergency room. The pair had been in a car accident when another vehicle crossed into their lane and caused their car to roll over; Grace suffered neck injuries requiring a cervical collar, and Giulianna experienced a seizure and nervous breakdown after witnessing her mother's arrest. Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies, who participate in the federal 287(g) program, questioned the women at the hospital before ICE detained them, handcuffing Giulianna while she was still in her hospital gown and escorting both women out in front of other patients and staff. Authorities said the women had overstayed expired visas, but family members, including Grace's sister Gia Calero, said Grace had a pending asylum application and a valid work permit while Giulianna held a visa valid through 2030. Video of the arrest circulated widely, drawing reaction from the Ecuadorian community and immigrant rights organizations, and neither woman had appeared before an immigration judge as of the reporting.
