Guatemalan immigrant tackled and arrested by ICE after being mistaken for different target

Jun 20, 2026Corona, NYGuatemala

Florencio, a Guatemalan immigrant who had lived in the U.S. for nearly 13 years and worked as a painter, was arrested by ICE agents in Corona, Queens while walking home from a job painting an apartment in Manhattan. His wife, Fidelina, and their three children witnessed the arrest from their doorway as agents tackled him, twisted his ankle, and handcuffed him before placing him in an unmarked vehicle. Agents had been searching for a different man of Ecuadorian descent but detained Florencio anyway, telling him his lack of papers made the mistake irrelevant. Court records show Florencio disputes ICE's claim that he admitted to illegally crossing the border, saying he was already restrained when questioned. He was held in detention for four months before being separated from his family. His case is among hundreds of street arrests in New York and New Jersey between October 2025 and March 2026, with more than 93% of detainees who filed legal challenges being from Latin American countries.

On June 20, 2026, he was re-detained by ICE during a routine check-in appointment without explanation. The federal court granted his habeas petition, finding that his prior release created a liberty interest in continued release and that re-detention without a pre-deprivation hearing violated due process. The court ordered his immediate release and enjoined ICE from re-detaining him without notice and a hearing before an immigration judge.

Coral entered the U.S. in December 2015 on a B1/B2 tourist visa valid for six months but remained in the country for approximately ten years. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a memorandum authorizing his detention and deportation, citing his political activities supporting Petro and opposition to right-wing presidential candidate Abelardo De la Espriella as harmful to U.S. foreign policy interests. Colombian President Petro accused the U.S. of political persecution timed to interfere in Colombia's June 21 presidential runoff election and demanded clarification from the Trump administration. Coral had filed an asylum application in 2016 and held work authorization through 2028 granted by a federal judge, but authorities allegedly informed him the authorization was being canceled. He has been transferred between detention facilities in Phoenix, El Paso, and Louisiana pending formal deportation proceedings.

Jun 19, 2026Clearfield County, PAEgypt

Izzy Aly, a 40-year-old legal immigrant with an active green card application and an Orlando-area Libertarian Party activist and media consulting firm owner, was detained by ICE at Philadelphia International Airport upon returning from an approved USCIS-sanctioned trip to Egypt to settle his late father's estate. He spent six months at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Pennsylvania, where a medical exam found stage 3 kidney disease, though he was not informed of the diagnosis until months later. Advocates allege ICE denied him adequate treatment, limiting him to only two nephrologist visits, threatening him with solitary confinement when he raised COVID concerns, and housing him in crowded pods with viral infections; he also reported seeing blood in his urine. Immigrant rights groups, members of Congress, and public figures pushed for his release, and he was freed on June 19, 2026, after which he met with U.S. Rep. Summer Lee, who had previously conducted an oversight visit to the facility. Aly, now back in Florida without health insurance, continues to pursue his legal appeal while recovering from trauma and advocating for the detention center's closure.

June 18, 2026Minneapolis, MN

Cameron Kennedy, a Minneapolis resident who monitored ICE activity in the city, is one of 15 defendants facing a federal indictment for conspiracy to impede or injure federal officers during Operation Metro Surge, with an arraignment scheduled for July 1. Prosecutors allege Kennedy and co-defendants, some linked to groups including Direct Action Minnesota and the Black Cat Worker Collective, coordinated protest actions such as blockades and surveillance of ICE operations via encrypted communications. Kennedy, who says he has protested government policies since age 15 and was previously arrested at a 2008 Iraq War protest in St. Paul, faces up to six years in prison but says no defendant, including himself, is accused of violence. Other co-defendants face additional charges such as assault on a federal officer and interstate stalking.

Belarusian cancer survivor hospitalized repeatedly after ICE denies her medication

Jun 19, 2026Miramar, FLBelarus

Katsiaryna Bartko, a 33-year-old Belarusian thyroid cancer survivor, has been held by ICE since early June 2026, most recently at the CoreCivic-run Midwest Regional Reception Center in Leavenworth, Kansas. She requires daily hormone medication and calcium supplements for permanent hypoparathyroidism and chronic hypocalcemia following cancer surgery, but her partner, Dmitry Shyshov, says she was initially denied her prescribed medications despite intake records documenting her needs. She was hospitalized three times in four days, once in acute distress requiring intravenous calcium, and lab records showed her thyroid-stimulating hormone soaring to over 31 times normal. A Harvard endocrinologist and an independent physician with Physicians for Human Rights both warned her continued detention is medically unsafe, risking organ failure, coma, or death. Bartko entered the U.S. legally on an F-1 student visa in March 2022 and filed for asylum in 2023, citing persecution over her pro-democracy activism and opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine; she was detained in Florida after local domestic battery charges against her were dropped and has never been convicted of a crime. She was placed in solitary isolation days before a federal court hearing, and a judge has ordered the government to bring her to a Kansas City courthouse to hear her petition for release.
