Toddler U.S. citizen left in Mexico after parents deported to Venezuela

Oct 6, 2026MexicoVenezuela

Eber, a two-year-old U.S. citizen, remains in Mexico in the care of María Estela Díaz and Miguel Maldonado Mendoza after his father was deported to Venezuela in early 2024 and his mother that February. The couple took him in because he needed surgery to remove half of his left lung due to a cyst and could not travel with his seven-year-old brother Isaac, who joined their parents months later. The surgery was successful and Eber has recovered well, though Díaz and Maldonado have faced financial strain covering his care and have turned to GoFundMe campaigns for support. His mother has registered the case with Venezuela's 'Gran Misión Vuelta a la Patria' program to speed up consular processing, but the family still has no confirmed date for the visa Eber needs as a U.S. citizen to enter Venezuela. Díaz said Eber no longer recognizes his biological mother and now calls her and Maldonado 'mama' and 'papa.'

Videographer shot with pepper round by federal agents while covering Portland ICE protest

Jun 13, 2025Portland, OR

Mason Lake, an independent journalist and founder of the Portland-based outlet Channel Heed, was shot by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents with a pepper round that struck his right arm while he filmed a protest outside an immigration detention center around 10 p.m. on June 13, 2025. The protest followed the arrest of Moisés Sotelo, a Newberg business owner detained by federal immigration agents the day after at least four asylum-seekers were detained outside a Portland courthouse following immigration hearings. Despite wearing clear press markings on his coat, helmet, and belt, ICE agents shot at him multiple times, and Lake believes the ICE Special Response Team was responsible, identifying agents' badges as belonging to the Houston Field Office. Since 2020, Lake has been assaulted at least 14 times while covering Portland protests. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin later said in a statement that journalists should be cautious while covering what she called 'violent riots,' adding that President Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem are 'committed to restoring law and order.' In November 2025, Lake and fellow journalist Hugo Rios filed a federal class-action lawsuit against President Trump, the Department of Homeland Security, and Noem, alleging indiscriminate, retaliatory violence by DHS agents. In March 2026, Lake and Rios won a preliminary injunction protecting journalists against retaliatory violence by DHS agents in Portland.

Naser, reunited with friends and family after his release, said he remains hopeful because of the support he received from Americans.

Jun 11, 2025Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, CaliforniaUnited States

His partner, a toddler, and an infant were inside the car at the time; the baby was seated near where one vehicle struck the car but was not injured. Agents emerged with weapons drawn, fired what appeared to be chemical or tear gas rounds at the vehicle, and forcibly extracted Cerno-Camacho, leaving the woman and children inside the car. The woman and children later fled to a nearby grocery store and were reunited with family about three hours later. Jun 11, 2025Los Angeles, CA

Officers used aggressive tactics including ramming his vehicle, detonating flash-bang grenades, and pointing assault rifles at his car while his partner and two young children were inside; court records show the arrest operation involved a drone, four vehicles, and a filming crew. Cerna, whose father was deported when he was 12, was charged with felony assault after border agent Eduardo Mejorado alleged Cerna struck him during the protest, though Cerna and his lawyers say he swung his hand without making contact; he was also struck in the face by pepper balls during the demonstration. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor simple assault in December 2025 and was sentenced in March 2026; a federal judge later criticized the case as a "vindictive effort" to impose extrajudicial punishment, and DHS filmed the arrest and posted footage on social media labeling Cerna a "violent rioter."
