Longtime Fresno man detained by ICE on way to work, family holds vigil
Luis Arreguin, 54, a Fresno man who came to the U.S. as a child and has lived there for 49 years, was detained by ICE agents around 5 a.m. on Oct. 1, 2026 while driving to work on Manning Avenue. His daughter, Elaina Salazar, said agents acted without a warrant based on a tip and told her father they knew he hadn't done anything wrong. Arreguin, described by his family as loving and hardworking, has a U.S. citizen wife, four children, and four grandchildren, and was in the process of obtaining citizenship before his arrest. His family held a candlelit vigil in Fresno, saying the arrest felt like a death in the family, and later learned he was being transferred again within ICE custody with no information on when, where, or why. He has high blood pressure that has been elevated for days and is held at an ICE facility in McFarland, where his daughter visits him three times a week. His detention came amid a surge of roughly two dozen ICE arrests across Fresno and Madera counties that advocates have called an "election surge."
