Haitian grandmother with torture protection detained at ICE check-in, leaving her nonverbal autistic grandson without his caregiver
A Haitian grandmother with protection under the Convention Against Torture was detained at an ICE check-in. She is one of the primary caretakers of her six-year-old grandson, who is autistic and nonverbal, and supports him and her daughter financially after her daughter was seriously injured in a car accident. Without her, the family suffered mentally and financially: "He would call for nana, but nana wasn't there." A federal judge ordered her release after a month, but she lives in fear that ICE will detain her again and deport her to another country.
