Bronx father shot in neck by ICE agent as young son watched, held in solitary
Oscar Belgal (also reported as Bergal), a 28-year-old Dominican father, was shot in the neck by a plainclothes ICE agent on October 8, 2026 during an attempted arrest in the Marble Hill section of the Bronx while his 5-year-old son sat in the backseat of his car. Surveillance footage showed masked agents disguised in construction vests approaching with guns drawn before Belgal drove off and was shot; ICE said his vehicle struck government vehicles and accelerated toward agents, which Belgal disputes. ICE identified the agent as Brenden Cuni, who had previously been named in lawsuits alleging violent arrests, and alleged Belgal was a documented gang associate with a prior grand larceny conviction. A bystander, Iris Rosa, said she ran to help him and that he told her he thought he was dying; his son was unharmed. Belgal was hospitalized, then removed by ICE agents despite Mayor Zohran Mamdani's attempts to intervene, and was later held at a private ICE facility in New Jersey before being booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he remains in solitary confinement with a bullet still lodged in his neck. His attorneys say he urgently needs surgery and has faced inadequate medical care, facial numbness, impaired hearing, and an untreated shoulder injury, and filed a federal habeas corpus petition after which a judge barred his deportation or transfer. Mamdani called the shooting an 'outrage' and said he negotiated with President Trump and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin for Belgal's release, while Gov. Kathy Hochul demanded an accounting and Rep. Adriano Espaillat said he was blocked from visiting Belgal in the hospital. Protests occurred outside the hospital and in the neighborhood, with some clashes between police and demonstrators.
