Chico construction worker detained by ICE, pressured into signing deportation papers
A 26-year-old Honduran man who has lived in Chico for seven years and worked in construction was detained by ICE agents on the morning of Oct. 9 as he and his older brother left for a painting job. Dark SUVs blocked their truck; his brother, who showed a Real ID proving legal status, was released, while the younger man was taken into custody. Agents told him they had been watching him that morning, including following him as he dropped his daughter off at school, and later threatened him with two years in jail if he did not sign voluntary departure papers, which he did out of fear. He was held temporarily at 650 Capitol Mall in Sacramento before being transferred to the California City Immigration Processing Center in Kern County, where his brother said conditions are crowded and meals are poor. Neighbors and relatives described him as a hard-working, good person who provided for his family, and relatives said children in the neighborhood have been scared and having trouble sleeping since the detention.
