U.S. citizen Ernesto Diaz handcuffed, threatened with Taser by masked agents in Chicago

Sep 1, 2025Chicago, ILUnited States

Ernesto Diaz, a 23-year-old U.S. citizen, was walking down Archer Avenue on Chicago's Southwest Side toward the subway in late September, earbuds in listening to Coldplay, when about six masked federal agents stopped him. Agents pushed him against their vehicle, ripped out his earbuds, handcuffed him, and pointed a Taser at his ribs, threatening to use it if he moved. They questioned him for about five minutes, asking if he was a U.S. citizen and inspecting his ID and Social Security card, before throwing his wallet on the ground and driving away. Diaz said he believes he was targeted because of his race and dark skin during Operation Midway Blitz. 'I'm Hispanic and I'm dark (skinned), so that's why they picked me up,' Diaz said. 'It feels scary because I'm wearing a target... It shouldn't be like that.'

Chicago tamale vendor released after six months in ICE detention, rebuilds her life

Sep 2025Chicago, ILMexico

Laura Murillo, a 55-year-old immigrant from Mexico and mother of two, was arrested by ICE in September 2025 while operating her tamale vending stand near Home Depot on 47th Street and Western Avenue during Operation Midway Blitz. She spent six months in federal immigration detention before being released in March 2026 following a court order rather than deportation. Murillo's tamale business, which she had operated for years, allowed her to support her daughters Génesis and Daniela and provide flexible work to other women in her community. Since her release, she says she is in the process of obtaining legal status and is rebuilding her life with a focus on her family, faith, and a slower pace rather than the constant work that previously defined her.

His testimony came as part of a class-action lawsuit seeking to improve conditions at the facility, and U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman called the described conditions "disgusting" and said sleeping next to an overflowing toilet was "obviously unconstitutional." A Justice Department attorney acknowledged the facility has no beds but said conditions have improved in recent months.

As of August 2026, he remains in ICE custody in Indiana, awaiting the outcome of his immigration hearing.

Asylum-seeking mother and infant son held in O'Hare hotel room for five days by ICE

Jun 9, 2025Chicago, ILColombia

Valentina Galvis, a Colombian asylum seeker, went to Chicago Immigration Court on June 5, 2025, expecting a hearing after her husband Camilo had been granted asylum in the same court two weeks earlier; the couple had fled far-right paramilitary violence in Colombia in 2022, and Galvis had survived a brutal assault by the group. Instead, federal prosecutors moved to dismiss her case, and plainclothes agents detained her immediately after she left the courtroom. Galvis and her seven-month-old son Naythan, a U.S. citizen, were taken by ICE contractor MVM Inc. to a Sonesta hotel near O'Hare Airport, where they were confined to a two-room suite for five days under constant guard, with the phone removed and no information given about their whereabouts. ICE's online locator falsely showed Galvis being held more than 700 miles away in Washington, D.C. Her attorney filed a habeas corpus petition, and a judge ordered she not be removed from Illinois, but ICE did not inform her of this. She was released on the fifth day to ICE's Intensive Supervision Appearance Program office and fitted with an electronic monitoring bracelet; her asylum case dismissal is now on appeal with a new case pending.

Abel Orozco, a 47-year-old tree-cutting business owner who has lived in the Chicago suburbs for about 30 years, was arrested by ICE agents without a warrant on January 26 while driving home from picking up tamales for his family. Agents had entered his backyard and porch searching for his eldest son, who shares his name, and after forcing open his car and handcuffing him, realized roughly 45 minutes to an hour later they had the wrong person—but detained him anyway. Orozco has no criminal record, arrived in the U.S. in the late 1990s under a legal work petition, and was issued a removal order in 2004 after visiting his father in Mexico. He has remained in ICE custody in Kentucky for nearly six months, during which his family has missed mortgage payments, his younger son has struggled to keep the family business running, and his wife Yolanda, who has spoken publicly about the case, has been fighting breast cancer. His attorneys at the National Immigrant Justice Center, representing Orozco as one of 22 detainees, have filed a motion challenging the legality of warrantless ICE arrests and are seeking his release.
