Chicago alderman handcuffed by ICE agents at hospital during enforcement operation

Oct 3, 2025Chicago IllinoisMexico

On Friday, October 2, 2025, federal immigration agents handcuffed Alderman Jessie Fuentes of the 26th Ward at Humboldt Park Hospital while she was confronting them about an arrest. Fuentes asked agents if they had a signed warrant before being handcuffed and led outside the hospital. Agents were at the hospital pursuing a person who had been injured and brought for medical care. The incident occurred during broader immigration enforcement operations across Chicago that included tear gas deployment and multiple arrests, including at least one U.S. citizen. Mayor Brandon Johnson stated that elected officials have a First Amendment right to document ICE actions and inform constituents of their rights. Governor Pritzker called for an investigation into treatment of children during a separate federal raid in South Shore.

Tear gas near Chicago school traumatizes children during ICE raid

Oct 3, 2025Chicago, IL

On October 3, 2025, federal agents conducting an immigration enforcement operation in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood deployed tear gas near Funston Elementary School, exposing students, including first-graders, and traumatizing hundreds of children and families. Children playing on school grounds, eating at a nearby café, and walking home from school were affected, including toddlers as young as 14 months old at Luna y Cielo Play Cafe, where nannies rushed children to a back room as gas spread. Teachers, including Liza Oliva-Perez, were tear-gassed while protecting students, and parents like Molly Kucich abandoned errands to reach their children. Children have since shown signs of anxiety, nightmares, and fear of family separation, with some asking teachers and dolls whether ICE will come for them. The operation, part of a broader initiative dubbed 'Operation Midway Blitz,' also included a separate incident at 51st and Damen where agents threw a smoke bomb and detained a person, alongside reports of residential raids, helicopter operations, and use of pepper munitions against protesters.

Children zip-tied in South Shore raid prompts state and congressional investigations

Oct 3, 2025Chicago, IL

Governor JB Pritzker and Democrats on two congressional committees are calling for investigations into a federal immigration raid in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood, where families reported children were zip-tied, separated from parents, and held for hours. Federal agents from Border Patrol, the FBI and ATF arrested 37 people during the Oct. 1 operation at 7500 S. South Shore Drive. Rodrick Johnson, a U.S. citizen, said agents broke down his door and left him zip-tied outside for nearly three hours, while a neighbor said she saw children removed from the building without clothing. Lawmakers have sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem demanding details on the warrants used, the number of citizens detained, and why children were restrained and helicopters deployed.

Illinois Township Trustee Testifies on Treatment During ICE Facility Detention

Oct 3, 2025Broadview, IL

Oak Park Township Trustee Juan Munoz was arrested outside the Broadview ICE facility on October 3, 2025, while protesting in a designated protest-free zone, and detained for about eight hours without being told why or what he was accused of. He testified on January 22, 2026, before the HART Truth-Telling Commission that then-Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino tackled him to the ground, that he was questioned by FBI agents without an attorney present, and that detainees had to share shoes taken from them during processing because conditions inside were unsanitary. Munoz said he was used as a backdrop for an interview Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem gave to a social media influencer, calling it propaganda, and said tactics he has observed used recently in Minnesota are likely a preview of what could come to Illinois. He is pursuing legal action over his treatment, which prompted a joint press conference from Oak Park's elected bodies denouncing his arrest.

Oct 3, 2025Broadview, IL

Kyle Frankovich, a protester, was arrested outside the Broadview ICE facility on October 3 while demonstrating in a designated protest zone. Federal agents grabbed and threw him to the ground, zip-tied him, and detained him for approximately eight hours without explanation or charges, making him stand along a guardrail for 40 minutes as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem walked past with cameras and photographers. He was later released without documentation or charges, and the following week his fiancée Leigh Kunkle was shot in the face with pepper balls by federal agents during another protest at the same site; the couple's attorney has filed federal claims alleging wrongful detention and violation of rights. On the same day Frankovich was detained, federal agents took multiple other protesters into custody as a crowd grew outside the facility amid newly installed barricades, with Illinois State Police also deployed in riot gear; at least five protesters have since faced federal charges from clashes at the site, where agents have repeatedly used tear gas and pepper balls against demonstrators.

Schools in the Bucktown-Wicker Park area were placed on soft lockdown, and confrontations between residents and federal agents at multiple locations resulted in tear gas and pepper ball deployment. Nearly a year later, 15 U.S. citizens and legal residents, including an Oak Park Township trustee and a Harvard data scientist who were zip-tied for hours at the Broadview processing center without charges, filed administrative complaints against the Department of Homeland Security alleging excessive force and wrongful detainment, a first step toward a federal tort lawsuit.

In a separate incident, a ride-share driver who produced an Illinois ID and work authorization had his car boxed in, window broken, was fired on with a Taser twice after the first attempt failed, and then tased again after being pulled from the vehicle. Border Patrol agents later confirmed 12 people were arrested in a parking lot where ride-share drivers typically wait between rides, part of the broader 'Midway Blitz' enforcement operation. In response, Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Illinois Drivers Alliance announced 'Know Your Rights' trainings for drivers and plans to post signage barring civil immigration enforcement from the O'Hare rideshare lot.

Mother, children released after Millennium Park ICE detention; father still held in Texas

Oct 1, 2025Chicago IllinoisGuatemala

Noemi Chavez, her husband Jaime Ramirez, and their children, 8-year-old Dasha and her 3-year-old son, were detained by federal agents without a warrant during a family outing at Chicago's Millennium Park on September 28, 2025. Witnesses and video showed Dasha crying and clutching a doll as heavily armed agents in camouflage took the family away in a white van while the children played in the water at Crown Fountain. Chavez said agents targeted them based on appearance; the family came from Guatemala in 2023 seeking asylum and has a hearing scheduled for October 2027. A neighbor whose son is in Dasha's third-grade class helped bring the family supplies and stayed in contact with Chavez via WhatsApp. The National Immigrant Justice Center filed a habeas corpus petition, and a federal judge ordered Chavez and the children protected from deportation; they were released from ICE custody. Ramirez remains detained at a Texas facility, where attorneys are seeking his release or a bond hearing, arguing he poses no danger or flight risk.

Man put in chokehold by Border Patrol agent after West Side car crash

Oct 1, 2025Chicago, IL

A man was detained by U.S. Border Patrol agents following a car crash on October 1 near Congress Parkway and California Avenue in East Garfield Park. Eyewitnesses recorded video showing an agent with his arms around the man's neck while he was on the ground with his hands cuffed behind his back. Chicago police said a 49-year-old woman driving the other vehicle suffered injuries to her shoulder, neck, and hip and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. The man was released at the scene after Chicago police completed an investigatory stop report. DHS disputed the chokehold allegation, stating agents believed they witnessed the theft of a $5,000 saw from a nearby construction site, the man fled in a vehicle, crashed into another motorist, and began resisting when agents attempted to render aid. Community leaders and city officials condemned the incident, questioning why Border Patrol agents were intervening in a suspected theft.
