Mother of medically fragile child struggles alone after husband's ICE detention in New Jersey

Oct 1, 2025New Brunswick, NJHonduras

Fanny Jakelinne Núñez, 38, is caring for her eight-year-old son, Néstor Josias, alone after her husband, Néstor Luis Rivera Chavez, was detained by ICE in October 2025 while running errands in New Brunswick. Her son is medically fragile, requiring constant monitoring of oxygen levels, feeding through a gastric tube, medication administration, and seizure management. Since her husband's detention at Delaney Hall in Newark, Núñez has lost the family's sole income and the only person physically able to help transport and care for her son. The family fled Honduras, where adequate medical care for their son's condition was unavailable, and came to the United States where the boy gained weight and began receiving necessary treatment. With her husband detained, Núñez struggles to afford rent, food, transportation, and medical visits, and fears that deportation would force them to return to Honduras and endanger her son's life.

Activists document ICE using disputed NJ warehouse despite court order barring detentions

Sep 4, 2025Roxbury, NJ

New Jersey's attorney general is reviewing reports that ICE is conducting operations at a Roxbury warehouse in violation of a federal court order barring its conversion into a detention facility. A May court ruling required ICE to halt conversion plans and limit activity at the site to maintenance, but a July 10 DHS filing indicated the agency intends to move forward with retrofitting the warehouse for detention use. The community group Sussex Visibility Brigade has reported increased ICE activity at the site, and the AG's office says it will take steps to address any non-compliance. The warehouse, purchased by DHS for nearly $130 million to become a 1,500-person detention center, has drawn bipartisan opposition, including a lawsuit from the state and Roxbury township.

Activist faces Trenton court case over documenting ICE activity

Aug 20, 2025Trenton, NJ

An activist with immigrant advocacy group Resistencia en Acción followed federal immigration officers for about 19 minutes while honking her horn to alert residents during an ICE arrest of a community member in Trenton on August 20, 2025. Trenton police stopped and arrested her, alleging traffic violations including failing to stop at signs, illegal parking, and fleeing after officers activated lights and sirens; she was released after a few hours but received multiple traffic tickets, which she is disputing with a criminal defense attorney. The Trenton Police Department has denied coordinating with ICE, though CAIR-NJ says she was arrested at ICE's request, a claim that would conflict with New Jersey's Immigrant Trust Directive barring local police cooperation with ICE enforcement. CAIR-NJ and community advocates held a press conference on September 29, 2026, ahead of her court appearance in Trenton to support her.

Jul 30, 2025Newark, NJColombia

Gloria Barazone, a 46-year-old Colombian national married to U.S. citizen Mounque 'Monk' Barazone, was arrested by ICE on July 30 at Newark Liberty International Airport while traveling from New Jersey to Miami. She had entered the U.S. on a tourist visa and had a pending green card application, work authorization request, and Social Security number application after nearly three years navigating the immigration process with her husband, whom he described as a former airport security chief and polygraph examiner in Medellín, Colombia. ICE said she had overstayed her authorized stay, which ended July 17. She was held in New Jersey before being transferred to Louisiana and then the South Texas ICE Processing Center, with her husband saying the transfers disrupted legal efforts and increased the family's legal costs. Mounque Barazone, 77, said he is partially disabled with worsening heart problems, is postponing surgeries, and is pledging his Social Security payments toward her legal defense. He said Republican lawmakers he contacted for help told him they needed consent forms from her to intervene, and he said he does not regret voting for Trump despite his wife's detention.

The Department of Homeland Security says he was released from custody on July 22 and died weeks later, but reporting from Status Coup and ABC News, along with accounts from immigrant-rights organizers, indicates he was released almost immediately after being detained and died shortly afterward. New Jersey Congressman Rob Menendez has said ICE can avoid reporting a detainee's death if the person is released from custody beforehand. At least 75 people, including one U.S. citizen, were arrested by ICE in Passaic that month, with arrests spiking 4,200% compared to the previous year.

Jul 8, 2025Edison, NJ

Don Lupe, who had worked for 11 years as an associate at Alba Wines and Spirits Warehousing and Distribution in Edison, New Jersey, and lived in the U.S. for 27 years after migrating from Puebla, Mexico, was detained when CBP and ICE agents raided the facility on July 8. Before leaving for work that morning, he had paused, as he often did, to pray before his family's Lord of Mercy picture, asking God to protect his wife and children and to let him return home safely. Agents handcuffed him with zip ties and transported him to Delaney Hall detention facility. His daughter, a pre-school teacher, learned of the raid mid-class when her mother called crying, and the family of six children surrounded their mother, who suffers from asthma, depression, and high blood pressure, as they frantically called immigration lawyers for hours. He was eventually released after legal advocacy and reunited with his family.
