As of the fundraiser, Benny has been incarcerated for 225 days at Mesa Verde ICE Processing Center, has lost over 50 pounds, and his next hearing is scheduled for September 1, 2026. Moroccan man released on bond after 108 days in ICE detention over wrong-address notice

Nov 25, 2025Newark, NJMorocco

Abdellatif (Latif) Hafraoui, a 60-year-old Moroccan immigrant who had lived in the U.S. for nearly 40 years and worked about 18 years as a Manhattan building concierge, was detained by ICE agents at Newark Liberty International Airport in August 2025 as he and his American wife, Sandra, prepared to leave for a Florida vacation. He was held 108 days, mostly at Delaney Hall in New Jersey but also at facilities in Louisiana and Arizona, based on a 16-year-old deportation order issued in absentia after a notice was sent to the wrong address and his lawyer failed to inform him of a hearing. Hafraoui said he was pressured to accept deportation, placed in solitary confinement for 10 days after refusing to sign documents or board a flight, and witnessed guards abuse other detainees; he said agents later falsely claimed a ticket to Morocco had been purchased and attempted to put him on a deportation flight to Qatar even after a judge voided the original order. U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez's office intervened to help locate him during the transfers and advocate for his return to New Jersey. He paid a $15,000 bond and was released the day before Thanksgiving, though the government kept his passport, and he must wear an ankle monitor and report regularly to authorities while his green card application remains pending; he has not returned to work, and Sandra said legal costs have depleted the couple's savings and that he seemed traumatized after visits.

Oct 30, 2025Atlantic Highlands, NJMexico

He is a father of three and co-owns the restaurant with his brother Emilio, after the pair worked together for seven years at another local restaurant, Copper Canyon. ICE says an immigration judge issued him a final removal order in July, but his attorney and Atlantic Highlands Mayor Lori Hohenleitner dispute this, noting he has valid work authorization through 2029 and a pending merits hearing scheduled for 2028. He has been held at Newark's Delaney Hall Detention Facility since his arrest. A protest was held in his support, a GoFundMe campaign has raised $85,000 for legal fees, and more than 200 community letters have been submitted on his behalf. A judge has granted him a bond hearing within seven days.

The women, including one identified as Sofía, said they were given little food or water during the days-long transfer, forced to undress and shower in front of a female officer, and verbally demeaned by an immigration officer who called them "bitches" when handing them to an Ohio county sheriff. Once at the Michigan facility, the women said the heat was not turned on during the freezing Upper Midwest winter.

Killy Tatiana Yangquen García, a 21-year-old Colombian woman who came to the U.S. at age 10, was arrested at the Savino del Bene bonded warehouse in Woodbridge, New Jersey, during an immigration raid in which more than 50 agents from multiple federal agencies, including a helicopter, detained 46 workers. After nearly four months in detention, including transfers across multiple states, an immigration judge denied her bond and she accepted a voluntary departure, returning to Bogotá in February. Her mother, María Eugenia García, has been living in hiding in Elizabeth, New Jersey, since the raid and says she has struggled to cope with the separation, speaking with her daughter only by video call, while Yangquen García's husband, who is applying for U.S. citizenship, hopes to eventually sponsor her return.

Mother of medically fragile child struggles alone after husband's ICE detention in New Jersey

Oct 1, 2025New Brunswick, NJHonduras

Fanny Jakelinne Núñez, 38, is caring for her eight-year-old son, Néstor Josias, alone after her husband, Néstor Luis Rivera Chavez, was detained by ICE in October 2025 while running errands in New Brunswick. Her son is medically fragile, requiring constant monitoring of oxygen levels, feeding through a gastric tube, medication administration, and seizure management. Since her husband's detention at Delaney Hall in Newark, Núñez has lost the family's sole income and the only person physically able to help transport and care for her son. The family fled Honduras, where adequate medical care for their son's condition was unavailable, and came to the United States where the boy gained weight and began receiving necessary treatment. With her husband detained, Núñez struggles to afford rent, food, transportation, and medical visits, and fears that deportation would force them to return to Honduras and endanger her son's life.

Activists document ICE using disputed NJ warehouse despite court order barring detentions

Sep 4, 2025Roxbury, NJ

New Jersey's attorney general is reviewing reports that ICE is conducting operations at a Roxbury warehouse in violation of a federal court order barring its conversion into a detention facility. A May court ruling required ICE to halt conversion plans and limit activity at the site to maintenance, but a July 10 DHS filing indicated the agency intends to move forward with retrofitting the warehouse for detention use. The community group Sussex Visibility Brigade has reported increased ICE activity at the site, and the AG's office says it will take steps to address any non-compliance. The warehouse, purchased by DHS for nearly $130 million to become a 1,500-person detention center, has drawn bipartisan opposition, including a lawsuit from the state and Roxbury township.

Activist faces Trenton court case over documenting ICE activity

Aug 20, 2025Trenton, NJ

An activist with immigrant advocacy group Resistencia en Acción followed federal immigration officers for about 19 minutes while honking her horn to alert residents during an ICE arrest of a community member in Trenton on August 20, 2025. Trenton police stopped and arrested her, alleging traffic violations including failing to stop at signs, illegal parking, and fleeing after officers activated lights and sirens; she was released after a few hours but received multiple traffic tickets, which she is disputing with a criminal defense attorney. The Trenton Police Department has denied coordinating with ICE, though CAIR-NJ says she was arrested at ICE's request, a claim that would conflict with New Jersey's Immigrant Trust Directive barring local police cooperation with ICE enforcement. CAIR-NJ and community advocates held a press conference on September 29, 2026, ahead of her court appearance in Trenton to support her.

Colombian woman detained by ICE at Newark airport amid pending green card case

Jul 30, 2025Newark, NJColombia

Gloria Barazone, a 46-year-old Colombian national married to U.S. citizen Mounque 'Monk' Barazone, was arrested by ICE on July 30 at Newark Liberty International Airport while traveling from New Jersey to Miami. She had entered the U.S. on a tourist visa and had a pending green card application, work authorization request, and Social Security number application after nearly three years navigating the immigration process with her husband, whom he described as a former airport security chief and polygraph examiner in Medellín, Colombia. ICE said she had overstayed her authorized stay, which ended July 17. She was held in New Jersey before being transferred to Louisiana and then the South Texas ICE Processing Center, with her husband saying the transfers disrupted legal efforts and increased the family's legal costs. Mounque Barazone, 77, said he is partially disabled with worsening heart problems, is postponing surgeries, and is pledging his Social Security payments toward her legal defense. He said Republican lawmakers he contacted for help told him they needed consent forms from her to intervene, and he said he does not regret voting for Trump despite his wife's detention.

José Chajón Raxón’s death disputed as ICE faces cover-up allegations

Jul 18, 2025Passaic, NJGuatemala

In mid-July, ICE agents conducted raids in Passaic, New Jersey, arresting dozens of residents, including Guatemalan national José Efraín Chajón Raxón, who was taken to the Delaney Hall detention facility. He died soon after suffering a medical emergency, becoming the second person to die connected to the facility within a month. The Department of Homeland Security says he was released from custody on July 22 and died weeks later, but reporting from Status Coup and ABC News, along with accounts from immigrant-rights organizers, indicates he was released almost immediately after being detained and died shortly afterward. New Jersey Congressman Rob Menendez has said ICE can avoid reporting a detainee's death if the person is released from custody beforehand. At least 75 people, including one U.S. citizen, were arrested by ICE in Passaic that month, with arrests spiking 4,200% compared to the previous year.

Father of six detained in Edison warehouse raid after 27 years in the U.S., family scrambles to bring him home

Jul 8, 2025Edison, NJ

Don Lupe, who had worked for 11 years as an associate at Alba Wines and Spirits Warehousing and Distribution in Edison, New Jersey, and lived in the U.S. for 27 years after migrating from Puebla, Mexico, was detained when CBP and ICE agents raided the facility on July 8. Before leaving for work that morning, he had paused, as he often did, to pray before his family's Lord of Mercy picture, asking God to protect his wife and children and to let him return home safely. Agents handcuffed him with zip ties and transported him to Delaney Hall detention facility. His daughter, a pre-school teacher, learned of the raid mid-class when her mother called crying, and the family of six children surrounded their mother, who suffers from asthma, depression, and high blood pressure, as they frantically called immigration lawyers for hours. He was eventually released after legal advocacy and reunited with his family.

Jun 15, 2025Newark, NJColombia

Four detainees escaped from Delaney Hall, a privately-owned immigration detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, on June 12-13, 2025, by breaking through inadequately constructed interior and exterior walls. The escape occurred amid reports of disorder at the facility, including complaints about delayed meals, poor conditions, overcrowding, and unhygienic facilities. Two of the escapees—Joel Enrique Sandoval-Lopez from Honduras and Joan Sebastian Castaneda-Lozada from Colombia—were recaptured by federal authorities by June 12-13. Two others—Franklin Norberto Bautista-Reyes and Andres Felipe Pineda-Mogollon, a Colombian national—remained at large as of mid-June, with the FBI offering up to $10,000 for information leading to their arrests. All four face federal charges of escape from custody. DHS stated the escapees have criminal histories, and facility management announced plans to move detainees out over the following 24 hours.
