Omaha contractor detained at Iowa traffic stop, sues for bond hearing

Usiel Sanchez Romero, an Omaha contracting business owner who came to the United States without authorization in 2013, was detained by ICE during a traffic stop on March 21, 2026. Romero, who has no criminal record and is married with an 8-year-old son, has operated his contracting business for seven years. Following his detention, he was taken to Pottawattamie County Jail and held without a bond hearing. Romero is suing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Pottawattamie County, seeking either his release from custody or a bond hearing in immigration court.

Judge blocks ICE deportation of Utah man detained after pinto bean arrest

Lorenzo Chavez Rascon, a 22-year-old Utah man, was arrested on February 23, 2026, on suspicion of selling drugs, but the substances were determined to be dried pinto beans. He was released from initial criminal custody but subsequently detained by ICE based on a detainer, despite holding deferred action status from a pending U-visa petition. On March 11, 2026, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking his deportation and ordered the government to explain why he should not be released, ruling that his continued detention violated his constitutional due process rights. As of March 14, he remained in federal custody.

U.S. Citizen rammed by ICE in Simi Valley, hospitalized while handcuffed

Leonardo Espartaco Martinez, a U.S. citizen and community watcher with VC Defensa in Ventura County, was violently detained by ICE agents on March 10 after responding to aid a fellow community patroller who had been pepper-sprayed on Buyers Street in Simi Valley. Video footage shows agents in four vehicles blocking and ramming Martinez's minivan as he tried to reverse away, with one agent emerging with an assault rifle raised; a photographer identified an emblem on an agent's hat matching one worn by an agent at a prior protest at the Metropolitan Detention Center. Simi Valley police also arrived and sought to question Martinez about the collision, but he requested legal counsel before speaking; agents then broke his window and dragged him out as he held his arms out to be handcuffed, injuring his knees, shoulders, and wrists. He was treated and later discharged from Los Robles Regional Medical Center around noon, and his minivan was impounded. This marks the third time ICE agents have rammed Martinez's vehicle; a previous incident on October 16, 2025, in Oxnard also led to his detention and transfer to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.

Indian truck driver with work authorization detained in Iowa State Patrol ICE operation

Syed Abbas, an Indian national from New York, was detained by Iowa State Patrol and ICE officers on March 4, 2026, while traveling through Iowa as a commercial truck driver. Abbas had been granted work authorization in 2024 and had a pending asylum application at the time of his arrest. State troopers pulled over his vehicle after the driver failed to stop at a weigh station, checked Abbas's immigration status despite him not being the driver, and concluded he was in the U.S. without authorization, then transferred him to Polk County Jail. Abbas's attorney has filed a federal lawsuit against ICE, the Department of Homeland Security, and Polk County, arguing his due process rights were violated when he was deprived of liberty without notice, hearing, or individualized justification.

Salvadoran father of three released from ICE detention after judge orders bond hearing

Jorge Calderon Rivera, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador who had lived in Omaha for approximately a decade with no criminal record, was detained by ICE agents on January 17, 2026, during a traffic stop while driving to work. He was held at McCook ICE facility for two months without receiving a bond hearing to which he was entitled. The ACLU of Nebraska and the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement filed a federal lawsuit on his behalf challenging the detention. U.S. District Judge Susan Bazis issued an order on March 3, 2026, finding the detention had an "unlawful aspect" and directing immigration officials to provide Calderon with a bond hearing within seven days. An immigration judge later granted his release on bond, and he was reunited with his wife and three children. He remains in deportation proceedings.

Cuban National Daniel Pino Alfonso Held by ICE After March Retail Theft Arrest

Daniel Pino Alfonso, a Cuban national who entered the U.S. unlawfully in 2022, was arrested March 3 in Spring Hill, Tennessee for stealing approximately $6,000 worth of shoes and possessing $3,400 in cash as part of an organized retail theft operation. ICE issued a detainer against Pino Alfonso, who remains in county jail pending deportation proceedings. His accomplice, Yadián Pérez López, was also arrested. Both men were charged under Tennessee's organized retail crime law, and authorities indicated the pair may have targeted multiple stores.

Guatemalan man detained by ICE after local police encounter, ordered released

A Guatemalan citizen who entered the U.S. without inspection in October 2022 was detained by ICE on March 1, 2026 after encountering local law enforcement and admitting he had entered the country without inspection. This was his first encounter with ICE officials. A federal court ordered his immediate release, finding he could only be detained under 8 U.S.C. § 1226(a) rather than the mandatory detention statute the government cited.

Guatemalan welder deported after traffic stop, leaving U.S. citizen partner to raise two children alone

Carlos, an undocumented Guatemalan welder who had worked as the primary breadwinner for his family for ten years, was detained by sheriff's deputies in October 2025 after falling asleep at a stop sign in Sarasota while driving to a job. He was transferred to ICE custody and held in a detention center in Louisiana. His partner, Perla Velasquez, a U.S. citizen, spent approximately $8,000 on legal fees to fight his case, hoping he could be released on bond given his lack of criminal history. His bond was denied, and he was deported to Guatemala in March 2026. Velasquez is now the sole provider for their three-year-old daughter Carlita and her thirteen-year-old autistic son Ociel, who is nonverbal. She works landscaping and construction jobs, often bringing Carlita along, and sells used items online to make ends meet while managing the emotional toll on her children, including her son's increased behavioral outbursts.

Enid high school senior Juan Diego Lopez Macias detained by ICE

Juan Diego Lopez Macias, a 19-year-old Enid High School senior, was arrested during a traffic stop for speeding on February 28, 2026, and subsequently transferred to ICE custody after being charged with driving without a valid license. He was transferred to the Bluebonnet Detention Facility in Anson, Texas, where he awaits immigration court proceedings. Student walkouts and protests occurred across Oklahoma following his detention, with classmates and family members gathering at the state Capitol on March 16.

Man who died in Louisville jail was subject to ICE detainer

A 21-year-old Hispanic man identified as Juan Miguel Munoz Penalver died in Louisville Metro jail on February 26, 2026, while subject to an ICE immigration detainer. He had been in custody since February 14 on criminal assault charges and was held under an ICE detainer that could have extended his detention beyond his scheduled release. The death is under investigation by LMDC's Professional Standards Unit and Louisville Metro Police's Public Integrity Unit.

Bradley County constables accompanied ICE raid in Hamilton County

Bradley County constables working under ICE authority participated in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in the Heritage Walk neighborhood of East Brainerd on Tuesday morning that resulted in multiple arrests. The operation targeted construction workers, with at least eight workers detained according to immigrant rights organizations. Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett stated his office was not involved in the operation, which was conducted by ICE task force members including Bradley County constables operating outside their county.

Nursing mother detained without breast pump, milk dries up during month-long custody

Antonia Aguilar Maldonado, a mother of two from El Salvador, was arrested by ICE while on her way to work and detained at the Kandiyohi County Jail in Minnesota for nearly a month. Her 22-month-old child is still nursing and has acid reflux and allergies to other forms of milk. The jail was not equipped to house a nursing mother and did not have a breast pump upon her arrival, forcing her to manually express milk until the facility purchased one. By the time of her release, her breast milk had started to dry up. Her children were traumatized by her detention. Her attorney successfully argued for her release on bond of $10,000, paid by church members. She is now requesting voluntary departure.

Man opposes ICE detention center in Wilson County

A Wilson County man spoke out against a rumored ICE detention center, expressing that he feels safer with undocumented immigrants than with ICE agents. Sheriff deputies responded to the man during his protest, though the ICE detention center plan was subsequently abandoned.

Guatemalan asylum seeker deported after Olathe officer violates policy calling ICE

Juan, a 21-year-old from Guatemala seeking asylum, was pulled over by Olathe Police Officer Todd Boyer on February 16, 2026 for speeding and driving without a license. Boyer violated department policy by calling an ICE hotline and providing the exact stop location, leading to Juan's detention and subsequent deportation to Guatemala. Police Chief Mike Butaud confirmed the policy violation. As of June 2026, Boyer remained employed at the Olathe Police Department.

Man arrested on ICE detainer charged with gun, drug offenses

A grand jury indicted Braulio Jara-Alvarez on federal gun and drug charges after his arrest by Topeka police on an ICE detainer in February 2026. Jara-Alvarez faces charges including unlawful reentry after deportation, methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute, and illegal firearm possession. ICE took custody of Jara-Alvarez on February 20 following his arrest at the Shawnee County Jail.

At least 20 Minnesota detainees transferred to Nebraska jails, complicating legal defense

At least 20 undocumented immigrants arrested in Minnesota during immigration sweeps since December 2025 were transferred to Nebraska county jails, including 19 at Lincoln County Detention Center and at least one at Sarpy County. Legal representatives argue that transferring detainees across state lines complicates legal representation, as Minnesota-licensed lawyers cannot practice in Nebraska, and some fear federal immigration officials are forum-shopping for more sympathetic judges. The transfers are part of Operation Metro Surge, which has arrested more than 4,000 people since December.

Indian truck driver detained at Iowa weigh station, sues for bond hearing and due process rights

Abhishek Kumar, a native of India living in Richmond Hill, New York, who entered the United States in May 2022, was detained by Iowa State Patrol and ICE officers on February 11 while driving a commercial truck at a weigh station near Mitchellville as part of Operation ICE Wall, a joint state-federal enforcement operation targeting commercial truck drivers near Interstate 80. Kumar was taken to Polk County Jail, where he has been held without a bond hearing or opportunity to argue for his release. Two other drivers, Suraj Vasal and Jagdish Singh, were stopped and detained by ICE at the same location on the same day and have also filed suit against the federal government. Kumar is suing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice, alleging violations of his due process rights and seeking either his release or a bond hearing in immigration court.

ICE agents clash with protesters, use pepper spray in Ventura County

Federal ICE agents were present outside the Ventura County Sheriff's Office on Monday, February 2, 2026, where protesters and observers had gathered. During the encounter, an ICE agent threw a woman to the ground and subsequently used pepper spray on the crowd. Witnesses stated they were documenting the ICE operation and posed no physical threat to officers. At least one person was detained during the incident. The woman who was thrown to the ground declined to speak about what happened.

ICE agents make arrests near Jersey City-Hoboken border
