Mom arrested by ICE at SLC airport unaware of deportation order

Marta Brizeyda Renderos Leiva, a 39-year-old from El Salvador, was arrested by ICE at Salt Lake City International Airport while arriving on a flight. She had a valid work permit approved in 2024 and was unaware of a 2020 deportation order, as the court notice had been sent to an address where she no longer lived. Her attorney states she was detained for months, transferred through multiple facilities, and deported despite having an active appeal pending, leaving behind her four U.S. citizen children.

Iowa family calls to halt man's deportation at town hall

Daniel Angel Meléndez, an immigrant from El Salvador, was detained by ICE agents on November 4 during a yearly check-in in Cedar Rapids. His wife María Lozano, a U.S. citizen, and family members appealed to U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks at a town hall on November 10 to prevent his deportation. Meléndez has a U.S.-born child and has been in the country since 2017, having applied for asylum based on gang violence threats.

ICE detains U.S. citizen for 7 hours after photographing agents

Berenice Garcia-Hernandez, a 25-year-old U.S. citizen, was detained by ICE for approximately seven hours after photographing unmarked ICE vehicles near a Chick-fil-A in Gresham. She was documenting the agents' presence to warn her community after seeing a Facebook alert. ICE agents broke her car window and removed her from the vehicle, though no criminal charges had been filed as of the article's publication.

Portland mother Kenia Merlos freed after four months in ICE detention, reunited with children

Kenia Jackeline Merlos, a Honduran mother of four U.S. citizen children, was arrested by ICE agents in June at the U.S.-Canada border during a family outing. She had been granted deferred status to reside in the U.S. after being threatened at gunpoint by a man. Merlos was detained at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma for nearly four months. An immigration judge terminated the government's deportation case on October 14, and Merlos was released on October 28. Her husband was deported to Honduras, and her mother also resides there.

6-year-old detained at Dilley, deported to Colombia after two months

Maria Vargas, 6, was detained with her parents at Dilley Immigration Processing Center in South Texas after her family was arrested during a September immigration check-in. The family had fled Colombia in 2022 and settled in New York, where they applied for special visas for human trafficking victims. At Dilley, Maria experienced severe trauma including regression (bedwetting and accidents), loss of appetite and weight loss, a staff member's accidental eye injury, and persistent psychological distress. Her parents reported officers pressured them to abandon their visa applications by threatening to separate Maria. After two months, the family agreed to self-deport and was sent to Colombia in November 2026. Maria continues to suffer vision problems, headaches, and behavioral changes including fear of police.

Cuban man's case exposes secret deal to deport 6,000 Cubans to Mexico

A Cuban man who fled Cuba with his politically active family as a teenager lived in the U.S. for over two decades, raised six U.S.-citizen children and owned a business before being detained after attempting to cross into Canada out of fear of third-country deportation. He was held at the Plymouth, Massachusetts ICE detention facility, where his attorney, Sarah Sherman-Stokes of Boston University's Immigrants' Rights and Human Trafficking Clinic, said she was not notified of his fear-of-return interview regarding removal to Mexico, which she believes violated his rights. He was deported to Mexico in November 2025, and his continuing legal challenge led U.S. District Judge William G. Young to reveal in a March 2026 order that the Department of Homeland Security has deported about 6,000 Cuban nationals to Mexico over the past year under an unwritten, standing agreement between the two countries. Young questioned the legality of the arrangement, noting it lacked any formal process beyond the government's own assertion that it was permissible.

Marine's mother detained at Camp Pendleton, held three weeks before release

Luisa Rodriguez, a Mexican national who immigrated to the U.S. over 30 years ago and worked in courts, was detained by ICE agents on September 28, 2025, at Camp Pendleton's gate while visiting her pregnant daughter, a newly enlisted U.S. Marine. Rodriguez and her husband Esteban Rios were initially released with ankle monitors but were taken back into custody at a subsequent ICE check-in appointment. Rodriguez was held at Otay Mesa Detention Center for nearly three weeks before being released on October 30. Her husband was deported to Tijuana on October 31. The family has pending green card applications and no criminal history.

ICE Arrests Indonesian Green Card Applicant at Biometrics Appointment

Rian Andrianzah, an Indonesian national, was arrested by ICE agents while attending what he believed was a routine biometrics appointment in Philadelphia. His arrest occurred while his wife waited in another room, and he was subsequently sent to a Central Pennsylvania detention center where he now faces deportation. The arrest is part of the Trump administration's strategy shift to apprehend green card applicants, asylum seekers, and others engaged in legal immigration processes.

Slovak man's lawsuit to halt deportation dismissed by federal court

A Slovak national who entered the U.S. in 2015 on a visa waiver and later overstayed was detained by immigration officials near his residence in October 2025 and held at Pike County Correctional Facility in Pennsylvania. He had pending applications for a green card through his U.S. citizen spouse and for work authorization, and later sought asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the Convention Against Torture, all denied by an immigration judge in March 2026. He says he endured months of physical and mental abuse in detention, and his family said he was removed without notice to them or his attorney; he and his family, working with the ACLU, then filed a federal habeas corpus petition seeking to block his deportation. In July 2026, a federal district court in Pennsylvania ruled it lacked jurisdiction over his claims, dismissed the petition, vacated an earlier temporary stay of removal, and denied his request for a restraining order as moot.

ICE Enforcement in Chicago Escalates: Lawmaker Threatened, Families Separated

Illinois state representative Hoan Huynh, a Vietnamese refugee, reported being confronted by ICE and Customs and Border Patrol agents who pointed a gun at his head while he monitored immigration enforcement operations on Chicago's North Side. Huynh was documenting the agents' activities and informing residents of their rights when the incident occurred. ICE enforcement operations in Chicago have separated families from their communities. Gerardo Perez's mother was arrested and deported in June.

Man fights deportation after 40 years in U.S.

Miguel Lopez is an undocumented man who has lived the majority of his life in the United States. A court case on Tuesday revealed a possible path for Miguel to return to Livermore and his wife and three children and granddaughter. His deportation order was based on the Department of Homeland Security's decision in 2014 to revoke his green card — an order he has continued to contest. His attorney argues that the 2014 decision violated his due process rights to review the decision. If granted, lawyers can begin presenting arguments about whether Lopez will receive a review of that 2014 decision to uphold the revocation of his green card.

Alabama man deported to Laos despite judge's order blocking removal

Chanthila "Shawn" Souvannarath, 44, was deported to Laos despite a federal court order issued the day before blocking his removal so he could pursue a claim of U.S. citizenship. Souvannarath was born in a refugee camp in Thailand but has lived most of his life in the United States and had been granted lawful permanent residence before his first birthday. A federal judge had directed ICE to keep him in the country while his citizenship claim was reviewed. DHS said the court order was not received until after the deportation had already taken place, according to attorneys.

Father deported after masked agents tackled and choked his teen son during arrest

Arnulfo Bazan, a Mexican immigrant from Michoacán living in Houston, was detained by masked federal immigration agents on October 23, 2025, while driving his 16-year-old U.S. citizen son, Arnoldo, to school. Agents in an unmarked vehicle chased the pair into a restaurant-supply store, where Arnoldo was tackled and choked, leaving him with bruises and welts on his neck that required hospitalization. Arnoldo was released after questioning and returned to family in Houston, including a sister who helps care for him. Immigrant rights group FIEL Houston said Arnulfo was intimidated into signing a voluntary departure form and was subsequently deported to Reynosa, Mexico, calling the treatment of the family 'cruel and unjust.'

ICE deports woman after reporting sexual misconduct despite court order

Silvia Reyna Mendoza, who has lived in the United States for 40 years and is a mother of 8, reported sexual misconduct by an ICE contractor. A judge issued an order prohibiting her deportation. ICE deported her the following day. She is currently in ICE detention in Kern County while her family pursues her case.

Josué Castro Rivera dies fleeing ICE agents on Virginia highway

Josué Castro Rivera, a 24-year-old Honduran man who had been in the U.S. for four years sending money home to family, died after being struck by a pickup truck while fleeing on foot from ICE agents who had pulled over his vehicle in Norfolk, Virginia, as he headed to a gardening job. His brother, Henry Castro, said Castro Rivera "had a very good heart" and is raising funds to return his body to Honduras for burial. DHS said the stop was part of a targeted operation and that Castro Rivera "resisted heavily and fled" before being struck; Virginia State Police confirmed he was pronounced dead at the scene and said the crash remains under investigation. His death follows those of a Mexican man fatally shot by federal agents during a traffic stop near Chicago and a farmworker who died after falling from a roof during an ICE raid in California.

Pregnant woman miscarries while shackled in ICE custody, denied timely medical care

Lucia, a woman detained at an ICE processing center, experienced heavy vaginal bleeding and cramping in the middle of the night but was not taken to see medical staff until the next day. Medical personnel left her bleeding alone without food, water, or pain medication for several hours. She was eventually transported to an emergency room about an hour away while shackled, where she required a blood transfusion and was informed she had suffered a miscarriage. She was returned to ICE custody still experiencing abdominal pain and heavy bleeding a month later, and has since been deported.

Mother of four detained by ICE at immigration appointment, deported to Mexico

Irma was detained by ICE on October 21, 2025, during a routine immigration appointment in Santa Ana, California. Her citizenship case was denied and she was taken into custody immediately. She was scheduled to be deported to Mexico on October 22, 2025, leaving behind her four children and life in the United States.

Venezuelan family flees U.S. after ICE detention under Trump

A Venezuelan family seeking asylum in the United States self-deported after the father and 20-year-old son Anderson Contreras-Hernandez were detained by ICE. The family had fled Venezuela due to gang extortion and sought better medical care for two sons with sickle cell disease. After months in detention and legal proceedings, the family chose to return to Venezuela.

Woman denied medical care in ICE custody after miscarriage

A woman identified as Alicia experienced severe abdominal pain, cramping, and vaginal bleeding while in ICE custody. Medical staff performed invasive procedures without consent and she was told she had miscarried, then returned to detention. She was denied follow-up medical care for over two months despite continued bleeding and severe pain. After deportation, she was diagnosed with a serious infection caused by lack of treatment during detention.
