The guard kicked his right side, then folded his body in half and dragged him to solitary confinement. Germán was given papers falsely claiming he had attacked an officer. He was held in isolation for at least 17 days at the time of his interview, with a 30-day punishment imposed. His appeals to ICE went unanswered. In August 2025, ICE agents arrested him at his home near Albany, New York, during an operation targeting his housemates, and he has since been held at Broome County Correctional Facility. Carlos Téllez-Sanchez, a Venezuelan man who fled his home country in 2019 and had been living in Dallas working at a car dealership while awaiting the birth of his son, was arrested by ICE in December during a routine visit to renew his work permit despite holding a judge's order protecting him from deportation. He said an ICE agent told him to "shut up" when he tried to explain the court order, and he was subsequently held for eight months and moved between detention facilities more than six times before being deported to Liberia. Téllez-Sanchez said he witnessed constant verbal abuse by ICE officials in detention and now hopes to return to the U.S. to see the newborn son he has not yet held. A lawyer working with him said ICE frequently moves detainees between facilities to prevent them from mounting legal challenges.

Dec 1, 2025Lumpkin, GACameroon

Advocates Noël Heatherland and Timoria McQueen Saba recently visited her through a glass partition for about 40 minutes, describing her as exhausted but hopeful, and noting she has found some solace reading nearly a book a day and bonding with other detainees, including another Cameroonian woman. She remains separated from her 17-year-old U.S. citizen daughter and continues to fear seeking medical care after a doctor removed one of her fallopian tubes during an earlier detention at Irwin County Detention Center without her consent. Her attorney is pursuing a U visa tied to her cooperation with authorities after surviving domestic violence and may seek to reopen her removal case based on fears of persecution if returned to Cameroon.

Legal permanent resident from Trinidad and Tobago deported despite medical emergencies in detention

Dec 2025Pearsall, TXTrinidad and Tobago

Elton Purvis, a 55-year-old legal permanent resident from Trinidad and Tobago and father of nine U.S. citizen children, was detained by ICE on May 13, 2025, at Boston Logan International Airport while returning home for his sons' graduation ceremonies. A Rastafarian priest with Type 1 diabetes who was suffering from malaria upon arrival, Purvis was held for seven months across multiple facilities, spending most of that time at the South Texas Detention Complex in Pearsall. According to an ACLU claim filed in July 2026, ICE agents ignored his malaria symptoms for 12 days, confiscated his prescription diabetes and malaria medications, and repeatedly ignored his requests for medical help during multiple diabetic emergencies—he was found unresponsive in his cell at least three times and hospitalized at least three times for dangerously low blood sugar levels. The claim alleges that staff ignored his strict vegetarian and lactose-free religious and dietary needs required for his diabetes management, forcing him to rely on leftover cornbread from other detainees and to filter dirty drinking water himself. Purvis said the experience left him fearful for his life, describing begging guards for help as his blood sugar dropped and he felt shortness of breath, dizziness and saw stars. He was deported in December 2025. The ACLU Foundation of Texas filed a $10 million tort claim on his behalf as part of a nationwide effort alleging medical and food neglect across immigration detention centers.
