Daniel Alejandro Núñez Ramírez, 28, a Venezuelan national living in Jacksonville, Florida, was detained by ICE on May 10, 2026, and pressured to sign voluntary deportation papers. He was deported on Flight 164 on June 24, 2026, and housed at the Hotel Santuario La Llanada in Caracas by Venezuelan authorities. Hours after arrival, a devastating earthquake collapsed the hotel, killing Núñez Ramírez and dozens of other deportees. His mother, Oswadeliz Núñez Ramírez, a lawyer, learned of his deportation only after he had already been handed to Venezuelan intelligence services (Sebin) without family notification. She recovered his body five days later at an improvised morgue and had him cremated. The U.S. government stated it was no longer responsible once he left ICE custody.
