Farzana, a 32-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, was deported by ICE to the Central African Republic on August 28 after years in immigration detention, including time held in Louisiana. She and her fiancé had entered the U.S. through the southern border in May 2024 seeking asylum via the CBP One app; her fiancé had applied for a Special Immigrant Visa tied to his assistance to the U.S. mission in Afghanistan. Her lawyers filed an emergency motion for a restraining order the same day she was removed, and the government denied the motion three days later. Farzana described being mistreated in detention, saying officers 'kept us like animal[s],' and she has since been diagnosed with a severe form of malaria while living alone in Bangui without identity papers, work, or family ties.

David Antonio Aviles Perez, a 35-year-old Salvadoran national known as 'La Bruja,' was arrested by ICE in San Diego on March 26, 2025, and held at Otay Mesa Detention Center for nearly five months. He had been convicted in absentia in El Salvador for a 2014 gang-related killing and was previously arrested in Monterey, California in 2023 for allegedly swinging a machete at a homeless man before being released from local custody. U.S. District Judge Jinsook Ohta ruled on August 26, 2025 that immigration officials violated his Fifth Amendment rights by detaining him without a bond hearing or individualized assessment of danger or flight risk. Aviles Perez was released from federal custody on August 27, with the court barring ICE from re-detaining him unless an immigration judge independently determines detention is warranted. The ruling did not clear him of wrongdoing or find him non-dangerous.

Robert Sidhe, a 43-year-old Kenyan physician working as a patient care technician at UW Medical Center, was detained by ICE agents while driving home from the gym in Lynnwood, Washington. While in custody, he suffered a medical crisis with dangerously high blood pressure and stroke-like symptoms and was hospitalized, though imaging showed no stroke had occurred. Sidhe entered the U.S. legally on multiple visas and has a pending asylum application filed in 2023. A federal judge granted a temporary restraining order for his release, citing the risk of a future stroke and noting he serves as the primary caretaker for his fiancée, a disabled U.S. citizen who uses a wheelchair. Colleagues described him as a respected leader in his union, church, and community.

A Guatemalan father of three, a native and citizen of Guatemala, has resided in Los Angeles with his family for many years and has three biological children who are United States citizens. He was arrested by immigration authorities on August 26, 2025, and has been detained at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center since that time. He is pending removal proceedings and is seeking Cancellation of Removal relief. An immigration judge denied bond at two hearings—one on January 12, 2026 (where he bore the burden of proof) and another on March 2, 2026 (where the government bore the burden)—based solely on his prior DUI conviction and immigration history, without adequately considering his family ties, stable residence, or lack of criminal history involving moral turpitude. The federal magistrate judge found the March 2, 2026 bond denial was an abuse of discretion because the immigration judge failed to conduct an individualized assessment, consider mitigating factors, or address alternatives to detention as required by the Rodriguez class action injunction. The court ordered his immediate release on his prior conditions of supervision and enjoined further detention without a compliant bond hearing.

A Guatemalan man who entered the U.S. without inspection in 2019 was arrested and detained by immigration officials at the Phoenix Police Department on August 25, 2025. He alleges that no agent produced a warrant, explained the reason for detention, or provided any documents. The court ordered respondents to answer his habeas corpus petition within 20 days and denied his motion for temporary restraining order.

Gagne Diagne, a Senegalese immigrant and DoorDash delivery worker, was arrested by masked federal agents outside his Bronx home on August 14 while his wife and infant were upstairs. He was detained for six days and nearly deported to Senegal before a judge granted his habeas petition and reopened his asylum case, leading to his release. The Amadou Ly Foundation, which supports West African immigrants, helped secure his release through legal advocacy.

Antonia Aguilar Maldonado, a mother of two U.S. citizen children, was released from ICE custody on August 13 following a federal judge's order. She had been detained on July 17 while on her way to work despite having no criminal record and an active asylum application. Aguilar Maldonado came to the U.S. in 2016 as a 17-year-old unaccompanied minor without legal status.

S-M-J, a 19-year-old with a disability from Guatemala, arrived at the Eugene Federal Building on August 12, 2025, for an administrative check-in and was detained by ICE along with his father. An ICE officer presented him with options to sign a voluntary departure order or receive a notice to appear, which U.S. District Judge Mustafa Kasubhai characterized as "coercive conduct." The judge's ruling ensured the voluntary departure order would not be enforced. S-M-J had lived in Lebanon, Oregon since 2019 and was a high school graduate.

A Nicaraguan citizen was detained at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2022 and subsequently released on parole. After living and working in the United States for more than two years, he was re-detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a scheduled check-in. He filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus and a request for a temporary restraining order, arguing his detention violated procedural due process under the Fifth Amendment. He argued that because he had been paroled into the country, mandatory detention under the expedited removal statute no longer applied to him. A federal judge previously found he raised a serious question on the merits and ordered him released, enjoining the government from re-detaining him. The court has now granted the habeas petition on the merits, ordering that he not be re-detained without notice and a hearing before a neutral decisionmaker, or absent a material change in circumstances. His request for attorney's fees was denied without prejudice, with leave to refile within 30 days of judgment.

Roxanne, a 32-year-old transgender woman from Mexico, crossed the Texas border in January 2024 seeking protection from discrimination and violence. She was detained by ICE in Eugene and spent a month in detention. She testified in federal court on August 8, 2025, describing her experiences of physical, sexual, and psychological violence in her home country. U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken found her testimony credible and ruled for her release through a habeas corpus petition, criticizing ICE's written statements as containing "serious inaccuracies."

Blerim Skoro, a 55-year-old Kosovo-born cab driver from Staten Island, New York, was detained by ICE agents on August 3 while attending a scheduled immigration appointment in Newark, New Jersey. Skoro, who has an American wife and three children, says he spent years working as a confidential informant for U.S. intelligence agencies including the CIA, FBI and DEA, infiltrating al-Qaeda training camps in Pakistan and helping secure convictions of members of al Qaeda, al Shabaab and Hezbollah after cooperating with authorities following a 2000 drug conviction. In 2022 he was granted a deferral of removal under the Convention Against Torture due to the risk he would face if returned to Kosovo. His attorneys filed a habeas corpus petition on August 4 challenging his detention and seeking to halt deportation, arguing a prior ruling requires a judge's permission before removal. Skoro says he fears being killed if returned to Kosovo and remains held at the Elizabeth Detention Center in New Jersey.

An immigrant man who lived in Maryland with his wife and children was deported to Mexico on August 1 despite a 2024 immigration judge ruling that granted him protection under the Convention Against Torture, finding he faced likely torture or death there. The man had cooperated with federal prosecutors, providing 'substantial assistance' by testifying against defendants affiliated with Mexican drug cartels. He was detained during a routine ICE check-in in January, held for six months at a Louisiana detention facility, then deported first to Guatemala (which refused him) and then to Mexico (which also refused him) before finally being deported to Mexico again after Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Acting ICE Director David Venturella intervened to override his torture protection. A federal judge later ruled the deportation violated his due process rights and ordered his return, but as of the report he remained in hiding in Mexico.

Carmen Aracely Pablo Sequen was arrested by ICE agents as she was leaving San Francisco immigration court on July 31, 2025, and detained at ICE's San Francisco field office. She filed a habeas corpus petition the next day seeking her immediate release and a permanent injunction prohibiting ICE from re-detaining her without prior notice and a hearing before a neutral arbiter. A Laotian refugee who entered the U.S. in 1981 was detained by ICE in July 2025 after 25 years of supervised release following a removal order. The court found the government failed to demonstrate changed circumstances or significant likelihood of removal, violating immigration law. Chief Judge Stephanie Rose ordered his immediate release and restoration to supervised release status.

Jorge Willy Valera Chuquillanqui, a Peruvian asylum seeker with no criminal history, was arrested by DHS agents minutes after completing routine immigration court proceedings on July 25, 2025. He had been living in the U.S. since December 2022 after being released on bond. The federal court granted a preliminary injunction ordering his release and prohibiting re-detention without a hearing before a neutral decisionmaker. He owns a local lawn care, maintenance and landscaping business in Rhinebeck and has lived in the community for years, attending high school there and building long-term employment relationships with local residents. A Manhattan judge denied his request for a temporary restraining order to pause his deportation on July 23, though the order expires July 30, giving supporters an additional week to pursue legal options. Community members including his former employers, high school teachers, and classmates have rallied behind him, raising over $60,000 for his legal defense through a grassroots fundraiser organized by Jenny Friedberg, who has employed him regularly for five years.

Jackie Merlos, an undocumented immigrant mother from Honduras with a pending U-visa, was detained by CBP agents on June 28, 2025, at Peace Arch Park near the U.S.-Canada border during a family picnic. Merlos, a well-regarded local business owner who had lived in Portland, Oregon for decades, was held in a CBP facility for 12 days. An ICE agent then called Merlos' friend Mimi Lettunich, demanding she immediately pick up Merlos' four U.S. citizen children—9-year-old triplets and a 7-year-old—or they would be placed in foster care. Lettunich, who had not cared for young children in years and had a full-time job, took the children into her home. Federal authorities attempted to deport Merlos without proper documentation or due process, but a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking the children's removal. As of July 2025, Merlos remained in ICE custody at a facility in Tacoma, Washington, separated from her children and facing formal removal proceedings.
