Columbia Heights fourth-grader released after month in ICE detention, heads home to father

Elizabeth Zuna Caisaguano, a 10-year-old fourth-grade student, and her mother were released from the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas after nearly a month in ICE detention. The child and her mother were taken by immigration agents in early January. They walked free on Tuesday night and are returning home to reunite with Elizabeth's father. School officials and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz had called for their release at a news conference on February 3, 2026.

High school student arrested at routine ICE check-in in San Antonio

A Natalia high school junior attended what was supposed to be a routine U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement check-in appointment in San Antonio to update his photograph. The appointment resulted in his arrest and detainment, leaving a toddler and stepfather behind for months.

ICE detains Worthington man with valid permit to be in U.S.

Jose Lozano, a 28-year-old Worthington resident with a valid temporary permit allowing him to remain in the U.S. for five years, was detained by ICE agents on February 1, 2026, while attempting to jumpstart his minivan. Lozano, who arrived from El Salvador as an asylum seeker ten years ago, was working as a mechanic and attending college when detained. He was being held in a Minneapolis detention center with a hearing scheduled for February 28, 2026, though an earlier bond hearing was possible.

Ypsilanti parents detained by ICE near school bus stop

ICE agents detained multiple parents near a school bus drop-off spot in Ypsilanti while students were arriving or departing for school. Local school officials and the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office confirmed the detentions occurred near bus stops, though not on school property itself. The superintendent stated the school district does not voluntarily cooperate with ICE and described the circumstances as distressing.

Agents raid GW-owned restaurant

EWS | Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided a Foggy Bottom restaurant in a GW-owned building Wednesday afternoon, detaining and questioning several people, the University confirmed Friday. Officials said in a Federal Updates email Friday that agents detained “a number of individuals” from Circa, located across the street from the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro stop, but did not specify how many and said they have no information suggesting any are affiliated with GW. Friday’s announcement followed a Thursday post by the Immigrant Liberation Coalition at GW, which alleged that ICE pulled between six and 15 people from the restaurant during the raid, detaining some and checking immigration papers of others. York Van Nixon IV, Circa at Foggy Bottom’s senior general manager, declined to comment on the raid or answer questions about the incident and the number of employees ICE detained. A spokesperson from Circa Bistros, which operates Circa at Foggy Bottom, did not immediately return a request for comment on the raid. A University spokesperson declined to comment on when the University learned of the raid, why officials did not issue a GW Alert and whether ICE contacted GW — which owns the building Circa operates in — ahead of the raid.

ICE detains legally present Maine resident after traffic stop

Deaf high school student tackled by DHS agents at protest, denied interpreter access

Anthony Paredes, an 18-year-old deaf high school senior at Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts in Los Angeles, was chased and tackled to the ground by Department of Homeland Security immigration officers on January 24, 2026, during a peaceful protest outside a federal building in downtown Los Angeles. Multiple bystanders shouted that Paredes was deaf and could not hear the officers' verbal commands, but he was taken into custody without a sign language interpreter provided. While in custody, Paredes' requests to use a restroom were denied. His mother, Guadalupe Diaz, expressed concern about the lack of interpreter access during the encounter. Educators and organizers plan to file a claim and lawsuit against the government and seek to have charges dropped, with a court date scheduled for April 1.

Seven Columbia Heights students detained during ICE enforcement surge in Minnesota

Brazilian student runner faces departure as F-1 visa expires

10-year-old Spokane Girl Detained with Father Despite Active Asylum Case

Obiang's family are asylum-seekers from Gabon who have been living in Maine for three years.

Gresham family detained by immigration officers seeking medical care

Morristown teen released after ICE detention sparks community rally

Juan Daniel Mendoza, a 17-year-old Morristown High School senior, was arrested by ICE on Jan. 12 while on his way to a Speedwell Avenue laundromat, one of 11 people detained in the area that day. He had entered the U.S. in 2024 as an unaccompanied minor under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act. U.S. District Judge Evelyn Padin ordered his release from Delaney Hall Detention Facility on Jan. 15, ruling his detention violated due process and that he cannot be deported while his case is pending. Two days later, hundreds of residents, students and lawmakers rallied outside Morristown Town Hall to protest the arrest and broader immigration enforcement in the community.

16-year-old Ecuadorian asylum-seeker detained by ICE, relocated to out-of-state facility

ICE agents detained Sebastian, a 16-year-old Ecuadorian asylum-seeker, in Minneapolis in January 2026 during an interior arrest while he was driving alone, seizing his phone after he called his father. Despite his father living in the U.S., Sebastian was labeled an "unaccompanied minor" and transferred to the Bridgeway shelter in Michigan, making it difficult for his family and attorneys to locate him. The case illustrates how the "unaccompanied minor" designation can impede family unity protections and legal access even when a parent resides in the country. While in custody, Sebastian reported receiving vaccines without consent.

Immigration agents use chokehold on 16-year-old U.S. citizen

Tenth grader Arnoldo Bazan, a 16-year-old U.S. citizen, and his father were stopped by immigration agents while getting McDonald's before school. During the encounter, agents slammed the father to the ground and put Arnoldo in a chokehold, causing him to struggle for breath. ProPublica found over 40 cases of immigration agents using banned chokeholds and other moves that restrict breathing.

High School Senior Detained by ICE While Driving Home From Work

Luis Fernando Cabrera Chavarria, 18, a senior and varsity soccer goalie at Northeast Early College High School in Austin, was stopped by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper on I-35 early Friday after finishing a night shift at Popeyes. The trooper, acting under a 287(g) agreement allowing local officers to enforce federal immigration law, could not verify his identity and contacted ICE, which took him into custody. He is now held at the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center and was set to graduate in June. According to ICE, he entered the U.S. with family in 2019; his sister said the family came from Honduras.

Border Patrol detains 10-year-old girl and father over missed check-ins

Border Patrol detained Guatemalan father Arnoldo Tiul Caal and his 10-year-old daughter Karla on January 10 in Spokane, alleging he missed multiple required immigration check-ins while seeking asylum. The pair were transported to a detention facility in Texas but were released Friday by a federal judge. The father had been living in Spokane since 2019 with his daughter, who was a fourth-grader at Logan Elementary School.
